Really good topic, and some great points. I've wondered this for years...
But also I've wondered why more guys don't like wordless music, because coming from a place where EDM was almost non-existant, I was still the weird guy who listens to wordless music to all the guys around me.
Honestly what I think it comes down to is that lyrics are familiar, because they are just words that we all use everyday. They are not foriegn, but rather they give the listener something to grasp onto, where they otherwise can not find their proper listening place in an edm song. For example, I get annoyed when certain edm vocals get in the way off intently concentrating on all the layers that are there, now girls, and my ex-girlfriend for example use the lyrics as a means to liking a song that they otherwisecould not fully appreciate. I introduced my ex-gf to edm and she simply can not listen to or appreciate the depth of the music I listen to.
So why do girls need something to grasp on to, or something to connect to? Like someone mentioned, edm is very disconnecting and I use it for exactly that reason. In my experiences girl do not like to, or are not able to lose control as well as guys. Perhaps it is that males tend to be more free-spirited in general, as in more open-minded, more thrillseeking and wanting the disconnect that edm can provide, because if anything lyrics can bring you back to reality.
I've had to learn how to properly get the most out of my edm listening, and I'm still learning how to space-out orget lost in new kinds of music that I just couldn't figure out before. This brings me to another topic that I've been comptemplating, what is it exactly that makes me love a 4/4 so much, deicdes that fact that I like dancing to it.
