Yes, but if you have 3 minutes to slowly blend in the bass, match the highs and mids and slowly blend the sounds together then smoothness becomes easier. I've said it before and I will say it again, beat matching is the most fundamental part of mixing, for me it has become second nature, I could happily hold 2 beats together for hours if it were possible. So I believe progressive is far easier to mix as I try to apply the same smoothness that I would give to a progressive mix to a trance mix. That means a lot less time to blend the kick drums together (a vital and overlooked area from many DJ's), basically no time to do anything with highs and mids, you can forget about doing anything with mids in 30 seconds. This makes it harder to acomplish a smoother sounding mix. You are correct in saying a lot of DJ's lack skills, but is true across most genres, there are a few DJ's which are technically gifted in each genre, some good ones and a lot of poor ones.

And focus is a matter of opinion, when I am focused in on a mix a bounce around with the beats, some DJ's just stand there, whatever works for one person may not work for another!

I've actually been disappointed by every set of Jules I've ever heard, but at the NEC he was great, top tunes, top mixing. Just hope he can stay like this for a while

i wasnt bashing tiesto at all...tiesto is still on of my favorite trance djs ....so is PVD ..many of you know im a PVD fan for the longest time and always will be.....just cuz im saying tiesto lack skills compared to some other djs doesnt mean im bashing him or mean i dont like him..... if tiesto played here tomarrow i would go see him or any other day in a heart beat.... just the fact that most trance djs arent that good technically when they mix

Yeah, Jules can perform well then not, pitty really because if he was 100 % consistant he could be well up there ! I still love him.

Armin has the mixing skills with out any trainwreck.

Hey, the first 3 sets i ripped from armin were horrible, The tracklist was nice but the mixing was dead. Pretty funny actually because the 3 after that were probally the best trance sets i have ever heard, he he. Its a funny world out there.

I never liked Armin in the slightest.....Untill i saw him live at suga shacks, You may have seen the tracklist in the tracklist forum. What a set, He has skill, confidance and knew how to blow that club up !

progressive does not have clear beats...progressive beats are quite similiar to house beats. house beats aren't at all the same as in trance, their a bit more trickier. now when i tried to spin a progressive track with another progressive, it wasn't that easy. of course, the beat matching in mixing is the hardest part. becuase progressive is not the same, each beat is actually different, and i can really hear this when i go to the club and listen to the beats of the songs i know. its amusing how you sit home and listen on headphones, and then take your ears on massive sound system and recognize almost every beat. i think that progressive is just a hard gender to understand and hard to enjoy for most people. people want good fast beats, with nice sounds without any repetition but for those who know progressive, we know that progressive is just so much better
Digweed has the BEST MIXING skills on this planet and the thing is about Digeers, that he always wanted to have turntables and spin them. he spent so much time concentrating on mixing and it really paid off when i seen him live, his set was just pure flow, no mistakes, the beat-matching was just so exact to perfection. i just cudn't believe it when he spins on his KISS FM sets, that his mixing is so amazing, but after seeing him, i do believe now Digweed & Sasha >> Digweed is all about the beats and Sasha is all about the melody

And for others who said we should try mixing progessive, how are we suppose to make a good set of a music genre that we do not really like? its like asking a rap dj to play rock.
