meh, its cool. i never would have even tried if you hadnt helped me, so its good for something. even if i just use my experience towards a new computer or whatever. i think i can get a full refund on the memory so it should be okay. the cpu just got here so after i check out info on pulling the old one i can see if that makes any obvious difference|

i think i might look into an old mobo rather than try returning all this stuff. its kinda pointless, but whatever|

the middle section doesnt matter. its all about the socket. which they didnt change if they both are socket370 (all intel socket style p3's were). the underside, besides the pin config, matters none.

nah it fit, the slots only went up to 600 methinks?

there are some limitations tho, often the 370 sockets only go to 1gig or from 1gig-1.26gig. either way, i just bid on mobo for like 15 bucks that should do the trick. we shall see|

apparently the slot was produced for the whole p3 line, but was abandoned in the main stream after 600 or so. there may be a firmware update for the mobo (although i personally have never done this myself and have always been afraid to as it can waste the mobo if done wrong) but i dunno.

oh and download either another 2k disk or an xp disk. cause you will need to reinstall windows after the mobo install. if you get xp, make sure to slipstream sp3 into it. it was released today.

Theres no tweaks. It either supports it or it doesn't. If it doesn't, you'd usually go check the manufacturers website, but since it is a dell thats like 10 years old (lol I know its not ), they won't have anything there.

Yeah. They are all like that. Although now, they aren't as closed as they used to be. The hardware industry has also eliminated the incompatibility issues that existed before.
