I'm not sure why electronic musicians are looked at as not being "real" musicians. Composing a good electronic song takes as much talent as any other genre.

To me writing electronic music is basically like composing a symphony. It doesn't really matter if it's a computer synth or a person playing the violin. Someone still has to decide what notes will be played and when.

I suppose you could compare it to being a "composer" but really, isn't a composer a type of musician? It's kind of like splitting hairs.

Joel is very talented, technically and musically. I don't think it really matters if he can pick up a guitar and strum or not.

I'm not a big fan of deadmau5, but the man got where he is today for a reason. It takes a lot more than just hard work to be an internationally renowned Producer/DJ, and without talent, he would be playing local gigs in small clubs for peanuts.
He has contributed a lot to the EDM community, and he is representing Canada/Ontario/Toronto across the world.
You don't have to like him, but you should at least have a bit of respect.
