Hey dude don't shoot the messenger. I didn't make the lettuce statement. But why do I think the Harvard/Columbia backtround is a negative? I don't per se, but in some cases like Obama, people who live a privileged life and are insulated within powerful liberal (in the American sense of the word) private institutions like boarding schools and placed like Harvard their whole lives, they soak up what they're told and believe it. They have a hard time relating to normal people and those viewpoints. This may be a bad comparison, but it kind of makes me think of how I went to public school until high school, where I went to an expensive catholic school. Most people there spent the majority of their lives in the private school system around nothing but other rich white people. A couple that had to leave and go to public school among the general population folded like deck chairs because they had no idea how to handle the real world.

Quite a strange coincidence academia is by and large liberal...Hmmm... I wonder why...

It's pretty easy to counter that it takes a lot of brains to become very rich, and most people agree that the majority of the rich are on the Right. A good theory is that smart conservatives tend to have the talents, abilities, and interests to pursue higher paying careers in business. Filling a university's faculty with conservatives would require offering compensation that is on par with the business world's compensation for people of similar ability.
I'd imagine it's far less costly to hire smart liberals, whose talents, abilities, and interests are not as well suited for the high-compensation business world. Many college students (and their parents!) would certainly like to see a more conservative faculty, but not if it means a huge increase in tuition in order to pay the salaries necessary to retain professors who otherwise could be earning $10M on Wall Street. As I like to say, those who can't "do"... "teach". lol

But this is a topic in itself. It can be looked at as a social movement; today's senior professors went to universities in the 60's and 70's, and they seem to me to be locked into defending what was that generation's radical agenda. Or, you could say humanities and social sciences shun traditional conservative values, so the curricula and hiring practices discourage non-leftists from pursuing academic careers and teaching those points of views.

Or maybe it's just a common understanding that the young are more liberal than the old.

It obviously goes wayyyyy deeper, and can be discussed ad nauseum. In fact, I don't think I have the stamina for this topic.
