That's an interesting question. I think alot of it has to do with several factors...Tiesto is a pretty "normal" type of guy, he can easily play the superstar figure and still seem not like a complete cocky-ass ego monger...in some way he can do this, still pull off the "cuteness" aspect for the girls. That's a big part. He is a staple in Holland, and all the Tiesto mega concerts have propelled him into something of an icon representing trance.
As far as the skill-factor, the ability to keep re-inventing his sound, throwing down fresh vinyl and amazing audiences with killer tracks, killer mixing skills, and the like....I don't think Tiesto is really that DJ. He is a sensation, but not a pioneer or a revolutionary, basically I am saying, people love him, and will go to see him, and pack venues just to get a glimpse, but overall I think he's an extremely weak DJ, sound engineer, and producer. He's not very original and gets lots of outside help when making tracks. I mean hey...I'm not trying to diss Tiesto, if he's good at anything, he's a good showman, and he's proven that.

I saw him at Ageha in April, and he was phenomenal. Not to say I completely enjoyed his set, but his showmanship was fantastic, and I don't think it's a case of DJ worshipping (least not in Tokyo) it was more of people going and knowing that they were going to enjoy themselves, and that's exactly what happened.
Mixing was techincally flawless, crowd interaction super etc...
I agree that he is often OTT, but equally I think he was and is to trance what Queen were to the Rock world; the first band to come on stage and really interact with the crowd and make a show of it, not just come on stage, put their heads down, play their stuff and go home again. Likewise with Tiesto, the guy is good at what he does. End of.

There's a word that sums up this sort of behaviour, and that word is 'reject.' |

Absolute truth, and that's why I struggle to understand WHY he's making such shit now.
Tiesto was huge at the start of the decade (granted, not as big as he is now, but not far off), and yet over the last few years he's deteriorated rapidly, producing shitty pop songs and not being all that much out on the decks either. Why? For money and fame, maybe... but he got where he was by making the stuff he did back in the day - better stuff - so surely there was no need to lower himself in order to achieve money and fame, right?
It's the same with Armin, just heard one of his newer tracks on YouTube, "In And Out Of Love". It's just so shit, it's embarrassingly poor. It's a pop song that has, for some reason, been made as a trance record. But WHY? Even three years ago Armin wasn't producing stuff quite this poor, and he was still well up there in the top 3 of DJ Mag. He must've had money and fame even 3-4 years ago, so why become EVEN shitter and EVEN more of a sell-out?
Look at someone like Sasha - he's been going since 1989 and he became 'big' quite quickly, so why wasn't he making pop ballads by the time 1996 came along? The last big tune he made was "Coma"; so even after like 15-20 years of being a massive DJ, at the top of the game, he's STILL making respectable tunes rather than pop ballads. And guess what, he's STILL big and STILL right up there at the top. Btw, I'm not just bumming Sasha because I like him, I'm trying to be as objective as possible in this post. I'm just using him as an example; you CAN have a big reputation without your music becoming shit. So why didn't Tiesto and co. follow that route too?
I mean, did they not probably hate cheesy dance music when they were growing up? Surely they were militantly opposed to it - but now look what they've become.
It can't be that easy sleeping at night. Sure, you're rich and (relatively) famous but you have to live with the fact you've absolutely shat all over the music you used to love and cherish. The stuff you were so passionate about, that you'd constantly have to defend against tools putting you down over it just because it's not the stuff all the cool kids are listening to. Sure, idiots bum you, but you know you've become an utter c*nt to music and don't deserve the success you've had. Can you imagine how bad that must feel, to anyone with a conscience?

truth here.. i remember hearing armin live on rapture tv for the first time in 2001.. he played the most immense set ive probably ever heard.. he has kind of gone the same route of tiesto.. and i agree about that sasha part aswell.. i dunno i wouldnt really say that armin has ever had the same level of respect as someone like sasha but sasha doesnt need to sell out to make money i guess... someone like armin does.
