I don't understand why it has to be that way.

And I always, always love it when it gets to the point where people talk down to me for being thoughtful about something I care about. If wanting to learn from others people is wrong, then I never want to be right.

I can't be blamed if there's nothing to be taken from DOOMBOT's contributions to this forum beyond having a prime example of how not to act.

It is that way because these guys are going to bring money to the club. People are going to show up because of who they are. Not because they are necessarily good at what they do. They draw a crowd.

I think you're over thinking it, man. It's just the sad reality today, It's not about who makes the sickest music or who plays the nastiest sets anymore. I wasn't there back then but I can tell that's how it was back then due to the nostalgia I see here. Today is about who brings the most money and the most empty head to the table. Sadly.

Apparently he made this clear in his first post. There is actually a hidden meaning in this thread. Maybe we should look to Richie Hawtin and the Cube?

DJs that also produce will always have an easier time getting a gig vs DJs that do not. The reason is simple: it is a major attribute that seperates them from the rest. Out of all the millions (that's probably an accurate estimate) of djs in the world, how many of them have a track released on a label (a label that is not a netlabel)? I'd say a very small percentage of all the dj's out there have a track released in their name.

long time ago, in the beginning, there were only a few djs and they were really good. over the years, more and more people became djs because it seemed simple and they said "hey, i can do that". so they give it a go and they end up sounding almost as good as the person that inspired them to start dj'ing. then, someone else sees them and says "hey, i can do that", so they in turn give it a go and end up sounding almost as good as that person that inspired them. this creates an endless downward spiral of talent, and its evident in the quality of livesets ive listened to over the past, hmm, 15 years (im 32).

so with all the djs playing more and more repetitive and boring, bar/club owners are confused, they dont know what to do, because all these dj's sound crappy and clear the floor and their bar ends up making more money on hip hop nights. but the requests keep coming in from folks that they want electronic dance music. so now with handfulls of djs saying "pick me! pick me!" it becomes all about promoting ... what dj can promote themselves better than the other, and one thing on a dj's resume that is a knock out punch to the others is a trackname they can proudly claim they created and was released on a label.

however, despite all this, you still dont need to have a released track to keep a job as a dj or get lots of gigs. you can still be successfull as just a dj, and here's how: KEEP THE FLOOR MOVING. if you make a dancefloor move better than the other guy believe me the owner is going to notice. it is still the most important thing to an owner, its just that those kind of djs are very rare lately.

i have seen proof of this firsthand a couple months ago and it was a difficult thing to see: friend of mine is the resident dj at a club. over the months, the floor got smaller and smaller for him. he went on vacation with family for a week and owner had someone fill in for him. the guy that filled in for him did a great job, had the floor moving noticeably better. the owner went up to him halfway through the night and offered him the job. he is now the new thurs night resident and my friend is cut to just wed night.

lol, whats not to understand? There's a million kids just like u who have the same music and same "talent" to warp tracks with Ableton. Years ago it was hard to find this crazy dance music, but now the internet has brought it all together, and the world is much smaller now.
