The poll reflects what RA is about.
I expect a poll by a hip hop music board would not chart guys like Hawtin or Tiesto.
The only truly global, genreless poll is the DJ mag one. DJ mag covers all kinds of music. Unfortunately, we all know how that poll goes...

I don't know....Tiesto has been known to throw a little hip hop in his sets

to me its saying that RA readers don't care at all about anything other than a really narrow band of music. and that's to their detriment, but its also very revealing about just how unfortunate they are to have not had an experience that would allow them to open their ears to a dj that incorporates a little more creativity than even those top djs in their list would put on display.

i got no bones with the list itself. it is what it is. but what it is says so much.

I like other genres of music then what RA covers, I just go to other websites / magazines / etc to get that information. No single website/news paper/magazine/etc can cover every possible genre - they pick the ones that they can cater to and focus on that.

I 'get' what your saying, just dont really agree with it. Yes, RA focuses on a certain subset of music, their top-100 list reflects that, and I don't see that as a problem. I don't expect to see Richie Hawtin in Rolling Stones best XX of the year listings.

I think it's fair to say that an RA reader is going to vote based on the bias of RA to a certain type of genre. I don't think the results say they have a narrow minded attitude towards music at all.

to be honest i was mostly just talking shit to make some people stop and think for a minute. but part of what i was getting at i actually do believe.

you know if RA subscribers aren't musically narrow minded then what's stopping them from actually voting for other stellar djs? RA is dedicated to 'dance and electronic music' and that's it, nothing more, nothing less. absolutely nothing about it that says it must be about what that poll reflects.

hip hop, drum n bass, house, techno, dubstep, and shit anything made with a drum machine, or what have you, is under that umbrella. there's no arguing that, its made with the same equipment and producers very regularly cross genres to produce in other genres for precisely this reason. its all the same shit. but maybe RA have grown or decided to deliberately focus on one or two of those aspects of emusic.

personally i think its an unfortunate thing. whether that's because its a reflection of RA's bias or the subscriber's or even the state of how music is viewed today on the whole is anyone's guess. but hey i like wide diversity in my emusic, not everyone does. nothing wrong with liking what you like, but it makes me wonder where emusic is headed is all.

I think you're thinking a bit too much about this -g-. You don't see people getting all up in arms that Rolling Stone's top 50 albums of the year is not including techno and house records.

I didn't bother voting, but if I did vote - I'd still vote for my favorite artists, which all happen still to be electronic artists that fall within the genres that they cover.

Again, a magazine covering that style of music, asked their readers, what their favorite djs/producers are within the scene that they cover - whats so bad about that?

You probably did have people voting for other stuff - but the ones that came out on top are the top 100 - would you like to see a list of every artist that everyone voted for?

Then, on the same site in their top 20 albums of the year - Flying Lotus makes the cut, and the guy goes all over in his musical styles and represents a wide range in music.

yeah but rolling stone doesn't have a manifesto of catering to all kinds of music - they are unashamedly about 'rock n roll'(and good for them for rep'ing that, i'm sure rock n roll needs something like that) - or even music period for that matter. brad pitt is on their current cover, which should really say it all as far as rolling stone goes.

but that's just it about RA. they're supposed to be about dance and emusic of all kinds. and so when they do a dj poll like this, i'd expect all kinds of djs to be rep'd. that entire genres of music don't make the grade says something, that's all.

nope not really. but its not just a question of this or that didn't make the cut. entire musical types that do fall under ra's umbrella aren't even on there. i don't think its RA, i think its the readers. maybe they feel as tho its the type of thing where they should be voting only for the uptempo type of music, who knows, but its just rather odd considering the supposed focus of the mag and its readers.

Other musical types appear in their top albums / top tracks, the top-DJs just cover one aspect of their various 'top' lists.

Their DJs do cover a pretty wide array of styles though - Skream, Hawtin, Lawler, Ricardo all cover very different ends of the EDM spectrum.
