I have a friend who adopted twice from Russia and it was a VERY expensive ordeal. Not only the process and paper work, but travelling to Russia 2 or 3 times over several months added up.
All in, it cost him about $45,000-$50,000 each time. |
Can't really put a price on the gift of a child you love though. Especially if you can't have one of your own and adopting is your only chance.

One of the pure math profs at Waterloo has adopted two kids from China and one from Sweden, I believe; she's never had a problem with it.
I, personally, don't think I ever want kids.
Some of my friends challenge this and say things like, "Dude, you are one of the most intelligent people I know; you of all people should be contributing your DNA to the next generation!"
Even for the sake of filling the next generation with brainy math geniuses... I honestly believe that my hours are better spent on research and projects that will serve humanity in other ways. Call it competitive advantage, if you will. Lots of people can have kids and do a good job at it.
That said, I am not at all opposed to donating sperm for the benefit of the human genepool, provided some necessary conditions are met.
