Aww Rich, I was waiting for your post!!
Yes, pretty much the only times I listen to EDM now are when I'm jogging or working out. Also, if I go out at all anymore (like the past few times I've went out), I don't stay out late. I just don't have energy to stay up all night, and I don't have as much fun. I mostly just go out to see friends. |
i feel ya on that. i still enjoy the music every bit as much as before, but lately it takes a lot to motivate me to go out to the club. especially the big ones on the big nights. most of the time it's something i decide to do on the night of at the last minute. with the things you're dealing with in la on such nights at such clubs--like traffic, paying for parking, expensive cover, no ins and outs, bigger crowds and the exorbitance of disgusting crackheads within--i would have been over it a looong time ago myself. but i don't think it's the music. if you went out to hip hop clubs, you would probably get sick of them too. maybe it's not crackheads this time, but persistent assholes instead. either way, it's normal to get jaded from the club scene once you've become too familiar with it.
the whole routine of staying out late, getting hammered, hearing damage, dealing with drunk people, trying to pass out after being overstimulated, sleeping in, eating like crap, and all the money thrown at the whole exercise seems less appealing to me than a nice 50 mile bike ride through the headlands or a 3 hour climb at the gym followed by a king's meal. and because i enjoy doing that, the physical toll of "clubbing" is that much more intense and makes it even less worthwhile. but goddamn does edm make that 50 mile ride so much more pleasant.
i still like going to the club to hear good music, but to be honest i have a helluva lot more fun at edm parties that are not in clubs. the fact that there was a day party for every night party at wmc helped me to see the contrast better. and just last sunday i went to the sickest park party ever, which only furthered that belief. that said, i'm not opposed to staying up all night every once in a while listening to a really good dj play a really long set. i would just prefer that happened at a smaller club or underground, where the vibe is strong. and even though i have an ear for rock and hip hop, i could never imagine listening to either for that long.
