That truck is full of gold too. Damn!!! 1st gen quattro Group B and a quattro Sport (looks like later evo or Pikes Peak one with the little winglets)

That one is real.
The space where BMW's 'Checkmate' ad was posted was rented for only two weeks. Audi has since decided to produce another billboard, and even held a user submission contest as to what should be posted.
The one you posted is definitely real, though I'm not sure if it was a product of this contest.
Either way, despite the fact that it was a short-lived marketing battle, I think BMW definitely managed to walk away with the all the pwnnage points.

By the way, the fact that Audi is posting up the R8 as some type of response to the M3 is just as inappropriate a comparison as BMW posting the M3 in response to the A4; these cars are simply not competitors with each other, and simply trying to top each other by using the next car up doesn't make much sense in terms of the department/class style of marketing competition.
The A4 competes with the the 3.30i, not the M3.
The R8 competes with the M6, not the M3.

arguable either way
what I mean is, you can look at it specifically like that and argue how its not a valid comparison, or you can look at it generally and say BMW pwned Audi on that ad which was basically flamebait.

That's basically what I thought they were going for at that point; it stopped being about demonstrating how one company is better than their rivals within a certain class as soon as BMW posted up their ad.
I actually would have loved to see this go on for a little longer, as I don't think I can ever recall a billboard flamewar.

but you know most people won't think about it that way. Audi does NOT have a car that is on level with the M3. So, the ad does make sense in that light. No, the S5 is not. BUT.. BMW does not have R8 level car.

Actually, the RS-4 amounts to a suitable M3 competitor, though I think it may be more aimed at the 5 series than anything else; but certainly not the M5.
Feels like its in sort of a no-man's land. It looks as if it was made to go up against the 5 series, but not it's top of the line model. It can put up a fight against the M3, but it doesn't seem like it was intended to actually do that (not lately, at least).
Still, though, let's assume they didn't have anything that was intended to go directly toe-to-toe with the M3; just because you don't have something that competes in a certain class, doesn't mean you should reach for the next class up and drop it into the bracket. If you don't have it, you don't have it.
