Yeah if I thought the Bible was actually going to be studied in these classes - that is, explored as a fallible work of literature with due deference to the findings of modern scholarship - then I'd be for it in a heartbeat. Like it or not, the Bible has held an important place in the history of western societies and I think it is actually pretty important that people understand what it's all about. Besides, from a purely selfish point of view, there's probably no better argument against the conceits of judeo-christianity than the Bible itself.
But of course, that's not what Abbott or his cheerleaders really want here. Their idea of Bible study is getting some sad virgin in a sweater from the Lutheran church to visit local primary schools, sing happy-clappy songs and bang on about what a cool dude Jesus was. I should know, because I had to go through these sorts of classes for three years at a (supposedly) secular state school and I wouldn't wish that shit on any child.
