How "live" is most of this stuff really anyway? Isn't it pretty much just triggering pre-made loops and maybe playing with some filters and effects? I don't really see what's so exciting or musically compelling about that, or even why it should "replace" a good DJ.

I can sort of see the appeal behind it, breaking tracks into loops and maybe rearranging them and applying effects in real time so that it's somewhat "improvisatory" and adds a lure of the unexpected, but I think that the lure of the unexpected should ideally be there with any old DJ set. You should expect to hear things you haven't heard before, or hear them recontextualized or manipulated in some way...

what is the difference between triggering some loops and beat matching 2 or 3 tracks?
