The diet basically consists of four "shakes" per day with vitamins, some sugar, essential fatty acids, and about 60g protein per shake. It has been proven to spare muscle even at quite a high caloric deficit, so it seems the protein must be getting used somehow. See this study, for example.] |
your body will synthesize glycogen out of protein. however, this is much harder on your renal system than using carbohydrates as your primary fuel source. this is my point. you could eat nothing but protein all day, but your kidneys would take an absolute pounding.
i expect organ stress was not a concern in a short term fasting diet, where the priority was sparing muscle.
a bodybuilder, or even the average person, is not on a short term fast diet - so many variables are ignored and this study is completely irrelevant. this is just another example of an unrelated scientific study being used to support some bodybuilding nonsense. did you know the popularity of glutamine is largely based on studies of use with burns victims? the entire supplement industry is based on pseudo-scientific crap like this and people lap it up like drones.

this is exactly what i am talking about. think of your protein levels as a buffer. let's say it has been 3 hours since your last meal and your protein buffer is in a 30g deficit. if you go and eat 30g in a highly bio-available and simplified form, how much of that do you think is actually going to get used? whey is extremely quickly absorbed and your body will not have time to make use of a lot of it. on the other hand, cottage cheese (casein protein) takes about 6 hours to digest and your body would use far more of it for actually healing and not just as an energy source. if you divided that 30g shake into 3x1 hour intervals, your body would make far better use of it and not just stress your organs.
moral of the story:
- protein for healing
- fat and carbs for energy
any of these in excess will be bad for you. balance is everything and, personally, i think the typical 40/40/20 macro ratio is a load of bullshit propagated by the supplement industry and just general bodybuilding doofus-ness. work out how much protein that actually equates to and you will never find a study supporting that much in athletes.

Bodybuilding is so homoerotic. I can't help but think that guys that spend that much time staring at each other and thinking about the male physique need to just admit they love the cock (and there's nothing wrong with that of course).
Discucssing male nutrition is like discussing berets IMO - you have to be french to pull it off, otherwise it's just gay.
And what the fuck does nutrition have to do with this thread or even forum....
...or are you two just proving the point that we really need a mod?
