Cafe Olivia - We'd sworn off random places but gave this bit the benefit of a doubt. Wasn't all that bad, but couldn't get into the vibe in an overlit room with people dressed as cats and bunnies hoola hooping in the back of a semi-warehouse rave. Really the only reason we didn't care so much for it is being served alcohol by what appeared to be a 14 year old, a pregnant lady, and well... we just weren't feelin' it.

Not sure if you had anything to do with any of these shows, but they've been enough to turn me and friends off of the dubstep parties for a bit.

I moved to Charlotte strictly for the EDM scene back in 2003, never once did I regret it. But you do need to get your facts straight. Moving to Miami for an EDM scene would be down right dumb, other than winter music conference Miami rarely gets good shows, even Charlotte and Atlanta has more shows year round compared to Miami. Now of course when stuff does occur in Miami it is fun.

If I could afford to move to NYC I would, these underground warehouse parties in Brooklyn have been fun as of recently.

I've only been to the Blue Frog once and I thought the sound was great and it wasn't overcrowded, but I am sure that changes with each event. I know I was told that there were a lot more people at the previous one, and I heard that it was packed this past weekend. Overcrowding does suck, but it is nice to see a scene so well supported. I didn't have any drinks so I can't say anything about the service. I was really there because I had some friends playing next door at the TNS Bar. It was all house and progressive next door with maybe 10 people. I played there in December and it was about the same. It really highlights the differences in support. Dubstep next door packs out - house and progressive gets 10 people (including the DJs). Regardless, I wouldn't call poor service at a heavily attended event shady.

I haven't been to Apache, but that does sound shady.

I don't remember seeing any cats or rabbits hoola hooping at the event I went to Cafe Olivia - but that definitely sounds like a rave. I am A-OK with the rave though. I prefer cats and bunnies to Ed Hardy any day of the week. I also like the bare bones venue - then it is up to the promoter to spice it up (lights, projections, lazers, whatever...). The same people were working behind the bar though. I got the impression they were the owners family members and I will never begrudge a family for trying to make it work. Either way, I wouldn't consider it shady.

Anyone ever go to the Pyramid? THAT was shady. Ketamin bottles and syringes on a floor are usually tell tale signs of shadiness. No light show and poor service are simply just that. I think we have different ideas of shady. I guess I have a different threshold cause if you went to any raves in the 90's in DC and Baltimore you get a completely different feel for what shady means.

The problem I have with over crowding is that it seems to make the staff at these little venues freak out and act more rude and aggressive. I understand that they may not be used to that volume, and I understand that higher numbers of intoxicated folks is pretty stressful... but they should still act somewhat friendly and professional if they want me to come back.

I never really bought on to that whole "If we act aloof and indifferent to our clientele they'll think we're more cool and hip" thing.

Cafe Olivia... call me paranoid, I just don't feel comfortable in events run like that. I was told by someone who helped put that on that they don't actually have a liquor license. The fact that they didn't have an open sign makes it a private party, where there shouldn't be legal issues there. Except that they were charging a cover. We went outside a few times, and even went down to the Graveyard a bit and witnessed a few patrol cars gathering around. I just don't feel comfortable in a place with a good chance of getting busted up by the pigs any minute. If it becomes a bit more legit, I wouldn't mind going back.

Yes a pregnant woman, an owner, was serving (not drinking) alcohol. God forbid she didn't have fake boobs and a tramp stamp tattoo...how sketchy that she didn't

The Apache door issue was out of the promoter's hands. Sounds like the tiesto show with the cut line pass. At the end of the show the promoter gave everyone their money back and the door guy was fired.

If you guys prefer the Operas to the Graveyards, so be it. If you want to complain about little things, fine...but recognize that those things happen at your favorite clubs too.
