Point taken. Show's still great.

Just finished ep2, with the lizards. Holy fucking epic wtf at the little lizard that has a hydrophobic skin and can't sink!
Same with the tumbling toad.
Brutal Komodo Dragons too with the buffalo hunting

Amazon's having a BBC Documentary sale right now. Good chance to grab this for a good price. I grabbed this yesterday along with Planet Earth and Blue Planet for $60.

what blows my mind the most is how they get such clear sound. i remember the post stamp sized frog moving about on the leaf, and they got every single damn little nuance of its movement on the wet leaf. i really, really want to know what mics and technique they use for those situations

none of those sounds are real...everything is created by a sound design team, i would know considering thats what i do the picture is priority, you cant stick someone in the forest and try to boom, you'd just scare everything away

that's what i thought. however i wasn't thinking of boom operators, i was thinking that since they usually camp out many nights looking for the right shots they'd setup small mics around the location that could pick up the sound. however, they would obviously not be as directional as using a shotgun on a boom. it's uncanny though, truly incredible how much work they put into it

hehe yes it is quite a production, i'm sure it's a blend of field recordings and mostly crafted sounds, i know there is fancy technologies and mics out there but if you make the sounds from scratch you can add more emotion and feeling to the animals of the scene. i would've enjoyed doing work for planet earth/life! i'm still in school though, done in 6 months so i'll have a few things lined up by then, yourself?
