People aren't posting a song they like in order to be judged by a jury of their peers as much as they're posting something to TRY and "learn a thing or two." If you think you have better taste in music, or the artists/songs you listen to are of better quality, maybe you should suggest some of it to them. I just think the Music Discussion forum should be more about people discussing the music they like in a more constructive way. Be as brutal as you want in your opinion of the song, but leave the OP out of it. If you really get more pleasure out of bashing someone, than you would about helping to broaden their taste, that's really sad.

Thank you. People are getting caught up in the Trance vs. Tech/Deep idea here - thinking that the problem arises from tastes having moved on and others still enjoying trance. I don't think that's quite the issue. I like trance, though I haven't been as exposed to it as many on here have been. I also love deep house - I've become quite passionate about it - but, again, I haven't been nearly as exposed to it as many on here have.

Distant keeps falling back on "maybe you could learn a thing or two" without recognizing that the desire to learn is exactly what I'm advocating here. He mentioned "alienating the teacher" when it is absolutely the other way around.

When that whole trancetop1000 site was first announced, I made a thread about it in here and eventually shared the top 10 that I submitted. Being a bit newer to trance but still knowing a bit about it, I recognized that some of the songs I chose would be understood and others would be flamed immensely but they were all tracks that, both at shows and in my bedroom, did incredible things to me. The best part about that thread for me was discovering tracks by artists I had never heard of that people considered to be top quality.

Look, I have no problem admitting that there is always some degree of subjectivity about music, and that there are many many people here who are more knowledgeable about me. This isn't about being superior to others. However there's gotta be a limit somewhere on where to take someone seriously or not, surely? If some noob pops up raving about Ke$ha and Justin Bieber as the gods of music, would you waste time arguing with that person for real in any musical debate?

Lately I'm trying to post by the rule of, "Ignore the bad, promote the good." So if someone posts about a track I think is awful, I usually ignore it rather than flaming it, posting a long critique of it, or getting into a big argument about it.

I used to find a sort of perverse fun in being negative about the music I disliked and really laying into it, but now it seems tiresome. I don't want to use up my energy dealing with crap, even if it's to try and "convert" people away from it by telling them precisely why I think it's crap. There's too much good music out there that deserves my time and attention for that.

Yes, there is a limit, but for some that limit already is reached if only one of the words Armin, Tiesto, A.S.O.T., uplifting, anthem, supersaw or minimal is mentioned in the OP.
No I wouldn´t argue, but if I felt the need to reply at all I would still do it in a polite way. Also in the late 80´s, early 90´s a lot of EDM got flamed. The same stuff now is called quality. If someone is raving about an artist at least this means that artist is bringing him or her a lot of joy, and I still think that´s the most important thing about music. Quality and all technical stuff behind it IMO is less important.

I don´t expect anyone to value my opinion actually, but that won´t stop me sharing it. Sometimes it´s good to show there is a lot of grey between black and white.
