Best case scenario you get to open for a big name, worst case scenario you realize it's a shit deal and walk away? Playing at the BPM Conference would be a awesome experience for a up and coming DJ!

Cam you're right and wrong. Its true I don't play out much but frankly I really don't mind. The DI thing keeps me motivated and gives me a chance to play to an international audience, you never know who might be listening. I know how it works Cam, you have to be at every party talking to every promoter and club owner every weekend and hopefully after a few weeks you get booked. I wish I was able to support all the great nights in this city and amazing djs we have but my budget doesn't allow it.

Toronto at the moment is in the Tech House phase, that makes things a little more difficult for me seeing as I play techno, and I'm ok with that. That's why I'm throwing my own party. Hopefully its a success and builds my name and brand a bit more.

If people don't book you say "FUCK IT" and throw your own party :P

I'm just giving them a hard time because they have been vague with their answers...and because its TOTA LOL. If what they are saying is true (and im not saying its not) then they wouldn't need to post on TA looking for djs...just seems like there is a catch. I apologize to them if they are offended. Im just very skeptical of everything lol

My biggest concern with joining 'the collective' would be the necessary concessions I would have to make.

Personally, i like techno, pounding prog and tech house. I despise swedish house mafia cheese, mash up, or any of that afrojack noise. I don't know if Id be able to get away playing what I like given the commercial nature of the events and especially after looking at some of the line ups.

Like Brennen said, there's a certain merit in throwing your own events and not having to sacrifice your musical integrity. That being said there are a ton of new dj's that absolutely adore that new pop-house sound.. and maybe this is their key to success.

If the collective starts booking in CZ or Footwork let me know.. ive always wanted to spin there =)

I was wondering the same thing. I sent them an email and hopefully they can clarify some things for me

Feelgood

We are an unabashed commercial endeavor.

Our goal (which we recognize is quite lofty) is to create commercially successful and internationally viable DJ/Producers.

Obviously there are many schools of thought and some people believe that by catering to current trends that in some way you are sacrificing your artistic integrity.

Our philosophy is to throw all that bullshit out the door. This month we asked Oliver (a French house producer in the Collective) to produce a dub step track. One of our most accomplished Tech House producers Paolo produced his first Electro track.

Were both tracks a success? That's debatable. However, we're forcing our team members to expand their horizons and by extension we're hoping to ignite their imagination. We're tearing down genre barriers and we're embracing innovation, experimentation and co-operation.

If trying to make money of your music and pushing the boundaries of your knowledge sounds compelling drop a line.

If you disagree with our philosophy I understand and respect that.

Best,
Alen

The expectations are pretty straightforward:

The AudioAcademy books top talent and brings them into the city. For instance we're bringing in Richard Vission on Nov 13th to Time.

Members of the Collective need to sell tickets to the show. We pay the customary 25% of each ticket sale back to the DJ. In addition, the top sales guy gets the number one opening slot. The number two sales guy gets the second slot and so on.

We also expect each member to create one remix based on an assignment we give you each month.

You will be given a remix assignment deadline. Once your remix is done it is peer reviewed by one of the top producers in the city in a group setting at Number 9 Studios.

Typically the feedback is quite technical. From that technical feedback we then assign you a research article. For instance last night _______ was told he need to improve upon his ducking. He's now tasked with writing an article that explains ducking and provides concrete examples of ducking in practice.

I appreciate the response.

Like you mentioned.. it is a different school of thought.

I would argue that is the very essence of sacrificing artistic integrity. If you're letting trends dictate your style, there is no need for your own personal style.

Regardless, you have outlined the collectives ambitions clearly. Personally not my cup of tea, but I can definitely see how this would be appealing. Plenty of resources at the DJ's disposal, healthy in house competition, rewards for doing well etc.

I ain't ever gonna produce a dubstep track though...

All the best!

In those 2 paragraphs there are just a whole load of paradoxes.

Good luck with your endeavors but I personally would not want to be forced to make a certain style unless I'm in the mood to. You don't grab someone into a group saying your eclectic when it's one big commercial experiment.

I think out of the box when I produce but I know it's not commercial enough for you people.

He failed to mention you dont get paid for any productions...BUT...
you do get the following

1. have your track listened to
2. be able to sell tickets to events
3. get booked at one of their events if you happen to sell the most tickets
