How exactly have you refuted what I said about Qatar's alcohol laws being comparable to the Canadian government's strict controls? The general premise of your intial argument was that virtual prohibition exists in Qatar! You then shift the goalposts and start bitching about what the price of the alcohol may be (which only a second ago did not exist!). Since you seem to still be disgruntled at Qatar hosting the World Cup, even after answering your objection about the lack of alcohol, I start to wonder what your agenda is, as logic does not appear to work with you. Instead of just moving on and maybe raising some other more valid concerns about Qatar's bid (such as what the fuck is there to do, besides drinking yourself comatose. I am under the impression that there any not many tourist sights to visit), you persist on digging yourself a deeper hole about bloody alcohol.

By the way, nice attempt at changing the topic and talking about how well-recived the World Cup will be compared with other nations. The focus of my points was about the challenging the notion that alcohol is banned in this Muslim country. I never said that, overall, it was greatest-ever choice for the World Cup; rather, that it is unreasonable to hate on the country's bid because of an untruth about alcohol. Can you appreciate the obvious distinction? Rather than confirm any inadeqaicies of the Qatari bid in this sense of alcohol prohibition, your responses reveal more about your insatiable and all-consuming need for alcohol. As a concerned fellow TA, I would get that dependancy looked at, if I were you, mate

I am not saying that it is good (it is one of the reasons why it should not be held in Qatar); just pointing out that it is one less thing to bitch about, even if people then go onto to raise valid concerns about the damage to the environment (which I agree with).

Seriously, how stupid must you be if you thought that Qatar could have won the bid without fans being able to drink? You cleary know nothing about the World Cup. Anyway, the country already allows the consumption of alcohol in certain hotels and bars, under permit; it is illegal to be drunk and disorderly in public, as well as to drink booze in public; lastly, the government is the only importer and retailer of alcohol. Therefore, exactly how repressive are the dinking laws? Well, about as liberal as Canada's!!! Also, as is the case for big events in Canada, permits will be issued for the sale of alcohol in fan-zones.

Just like with one-party states in Russia and China (excellent hosts of the recent Olympics), one thing that you can guarantee is that decisive action will be taken to ensure that everything gets completed on time, and that the tournament is well-organised.

Now that I think about it, I am actually starting to warm to the idea of Qatar being a host, at least in one sence: if nothing else, it will help dispel the racist myth that Middle Eastern folk are subhuman terrorists who all get off on watching people get stoned to death.

Jeez. We all know that stadiums are gonna be "cooled down" to a certain extent with the technology - duh - dont assume we didn't read about it. But is the whole country of Qatar gonna be cooled for this event? With average temperatures of 40-45 degrees Centigrade, its gonna be lots of fun between the matches! You know, fans are only spending 2-4 hours at the match per day, and the rest in the scorching desert heat. I personally would not want to be confined to my hotel ...

Some of the earlier points referred to the temperature of the stadia, specifically, and how it would affect the fans and players.

Now explain to me how Qatar's laws are about as Liberal as Canada's?

- Do we need a special permit from our employer stating that it is cool with them if we buy alcohol from the ONLY store in Canada / Ontario / Toronto / even Suburb of Toronto that carries alcohol?

- Are we not allowed to bring alcohol back to Canada with us from a trip?

- Are the only places where one can buy alcohol a hotel lobby / restaurant or nightclub?

If these are not strict antiquated laws then I don't know what are. Perhaps we have a different definition of the term.

And what are you going to tell me next? That a female not being allowed to wear a bikini to the beach in 40-50 degree weather because she should respect the culture and not expose her body flesh to public is "about as liberal as Canada" and the laws we have here pertaining to that?

I"m disappointed Japan didn't get the 2022 World Cup simply because of this:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2124...eam_denied.html

quote:
Earlier this year, we reported on Japan's plans for a holographic broadcast the 2022 World Cup as part of its bid to hold the soccer tournament. If you were looking forward to this, well, we're sorry to disappoint: Japan's World Cup bid was rejected, and along with it went holographic broadcast plans.

For those of you not familiar with the nations proposal, Japan's 2022 World Cup bid included plans to simultaneously broadcast matches across the world, live, to 400 international stadiums, all in glorious holographic 3D.

The idea was that soccer fans would be able to head to their national stadium to view matches. Once there, fans could watch matches on in front of them live, thanks to holographic imagesbroadcast from thousands of miles away.

Japan's ambitious bid, which was backed by Sony, lost out to Qatar in 2022, with Russia hosting the 2018 tournament.

Kohzo Tashima, the Chief Executive of the Japanese bid said the prospect of global hologram broadcasts was an idea that blew his mind. He told the FIFA board that three hundred and sixty million people could have had "a full stadium experience of matches" which was "over 100 times the number of spectators at the 1994 World Cup in the United States".

Not a surprise. This idea must've scared the shit out of FIFA and their stone age traditions.

can't disagree with anything you said there Margs...
Turkey even has a VERY well developed domestic league and stadiums.
Problem is, they didn't submit a bid for either of these WCs

They were criticising FIFA before the decision, but now English officials and their media has launched a serious bashing campaign and barrage of criticism.

You can be sure that they will not win the right to host World Cup in the near future ...

they deff do have alot of great stadium's and a huge support for it...i dont think their infrastructure and mass transit is up to par as of yet tho, not saying it couldnt be ready by the wc, but thats the only reason why i dont think they could have submitted their bid...i know they put in bids for the eurocup and lost their also
very strange

on a side note those stadium's in qatar do look pretty impressive
as do the stadiums for the wc in brazil for 2014, i hope its all ready in time
