1. If you have a job and you commute, or work in any kind of environment that allows music, you've got time to listen to music. And you should find the time, quite frankly.
2. The music of others is absolutely vital for creating your own. Absolutely vital. Even when you're just starting out, learning how to make sounds, you do so through imitation. The more different styles, approaches and ideas you've been exposed to and continue to expose yourself to, the broader your palette will be. |
1. Last year, I worked a job in which inter-office communication was vital, and where we weren't allowed to wear headphones or listen to music. I carpooled to work, meaning I couldn't listen to music, and on the rare occasions when I was alone in the car, I spent it listening to Spanish audiobooks in order to study for university. At the gym, I had many friends, meaning wearing headphones was a social snub. Basically, my only free listening time was the 90 minutes or so between getting home and going to bed, and weekends. However, I also had very little time to research or find new music. Not everyone has the same lifestyle as you, so stop being pig-headead.
2. How can you say that when you have no real producing experience yourself?
I should add that I'm not really trying to defend anyone here. Your point has plenty of validity, I'm just throwing light on some things you failed to consider along the way.
The biggest problem I have with this forum is the way people give feedback to one another. I'm familiar with nearly all of the technical jargon I read, so I'm not intimidated by that. However, anytime someone asks for advice, it's always, "oh, you need to throw a filter on that bass and cut off all the frequencies below 10kHz." People are always imposing their own styles and techniques on others rather than a more general "that bass is a little muddy...". It's like everyone wants to re-write one another's essays rather than just fixing the spelling and punctuation.
Oh, and so many people in this section are little cry-baby bitches. With exceptions, you're all so busy slapping one another on the back that whenever anyone poses the slightest bit of criticism, they're treated like a bitter, vindictive individual, as this thread has proven.
