Hi everyone,
Here is this months mix as I was requested to make a mix for August. Haven't got too much to say about my selection here,it's quite varied but I wanted to put some of my favourite music in that I wouldn't dj with normaly. I like edgy, groovy, strange and epic stuff of sorts and that's reflected here, I didn't pay too much attention to mixing here, although I wish it was better I don't care too much as this mix isn't really about that. Just hope it flows somewhat and that some of you enjoy the music here.
Inspiration Download
Tracklist.
1. Frank Zappa - The Way I See It Barry/Peaches En Regalia [Verve Records/Reprise Records.1969/70]
I'm kicking thing's off here with the guy who has inspired me the most, I think. Always been fascinated by FZ, way ahead of his time imo. I have so many favourite song's from Frank too it was hard to decide but I went with Peaches because it's a firm favourite.
2. Herbie Hancock - Watermelon Man [CBS.1973]
I've chosen Hancock's re-worked version here taken from the Head Hunters album where he really funks it up. I listen to quite a bit of
old funk and jazz records and Watermelon Man is such a seriously good groovin tune. I love it.
3. The Beach Boys - Do You Dig Worms/Roll Plymouth Rock [Capitol.1966]
Also being a fan of Brian Wilson, this is perhaps my favourite song of his. The Bicycle Rider theme played out on harpsichord is kinda eerie but I'm intrigued. Originally intended for release on Smile in 1966, it came out under the title Roll Plymouth Rock when Brian released Smile in 2004. This is the original Beach Boys version taken from the Good Vibrations box set recorded during the Heroes And Villains sessions
4. Tori Amos - Icicle [EastWest.1994]
This is a beautifully written piece of music imo, easily my favourite song from Tori Amos. I only actually really like her Under The Pink album. Starts out with some eerie piano lines I've tried to blend in to the tail of Do You Like Worms, before it really gets into it.
5. Dire Straits - Ride Across The River [live in Sydney 1986]
This concert really sparked my interest in music, I was about 5 at the time and I just loved Dire Straits. It wasn't long after that I got some drums and wanted to play! I really like this live version taken from the final concert of their 1985/6 tour in Sydney. The play between Knopfler and Chris White on the flute is just superb, just a really polished performance.
6. Sonic Animation - The Nothingness [Global Recordings.1999]
Sonic Animation pretty much sparked my interest in electronic music back in the late 90's. Before then I listened to a lot more live music and bands etc. But yeah, they just blew me away at a few parties and festivals and really put on a mad fun, energetic show around then. This is a more chilled downtempo affair from them but I
like the haunting vocals from Becca Boucher. Really I think Orchid For The Afterworld is an essential EDM album that everyone here should have.
7. The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows [Apple Records.1966]
Again I've been a fan of the Beatles music for a long time and could have picked many of their tunes, but this one is my favourite from their Revolver album. A really experimental and psychedelic song from that time using lots of production effects and is one of the first songs to uses a flanger on an instrument.
8. The Dudley Moore Trio - Song For Suzy [Atlantic 1972]
Dudley Moore was pretty clever and I've liked his jazz records for a while. He released three LP's on Atlantic from 65-72, this is probably one of his trio's better known songs from his last album, Today. Sorry for the crackles an pops, the record is old and so worn.
9. Dream Theater - Hell's Kitchen [East West Records.1997]
Well this is a pretty epic peice imo. The vocalist kinda put me off Dream Theater but I really like some of their instrumentals like this, with impeccable chops and an epic progression the music here really blows me away every time I hear it. I got into really heavy drum and guitar stuff while I was growing up, listening to a lot of metal, I like John Petrucci's guitar and Mike Portnoy's playing in particular, even though they come across as egotistical.
10. Mr. Oizo - Analog Worms Attack [Creating Vibes.1999]
I started listening to more obscure and experimental techno and electronica around 2000 like Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and the like and by then interested in learning to dj. The bass in this Mr. Oizo
track floored me first time I heard it, I guess it could be just a personal thing, but one of those moments I've never forgotten.
11. Rage Against The Machine - Maggie's Farm [Sony Music.2000]
This is a cover of an old Bob Dylan classic, taken from their Renegades albumn. I've been a big fan of Rage for years and love the agression and power of their sound, and the way they've injected that into this song. This is my favorite track from that albumn, which were all covers. I've got loads of other RATM tunes I love too, but decided to put this in.
12. Pink Floyd - Interstellar Overdrive [EMI.1967]
Ahh well I couldn't leave out another favourite band of mine. I've always like their earlier more experimental, pre-Dark Side of The Moon stuff a lot more, and this is a personal favourite from the first albumn Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and my favourite of Syd Barrett's songs. I like the tripped out mid-section, and the main riff is just massive.
13. Spiritualized - I Think I'm In Love (The Chemical Brother's Mix) [BMG.1997]
So I also was listening to a lot of big-beat stuff like Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Propellerheads, Crystal Method etc. along with Sonic Animation and a few other trip-hop bands as I was first delving into electronic music. The original is really cool, but I really like the Chemical Brothers' big beat treatment here.
14. Honeysmack - Slapjack (live) [Smelly Records.1999]
Some of my more early techno influences here. Was getting out to more tech nights and raves around Melbourne at the time this came out. I guess this would be one of those really personal classics because there's nothing really in this that hadn't kinda been done before, but man this track used to get me so pumped to get out. It's a pretty massive live 303 acid affair recorded at revolver nightclub in Melbourne, the build up sends me mental everytime.
15. Tony De Vit - The Dawn [Tidy Trax.2000]
I'm known to play my share of cheesy hard dance and thought it fitting to include at least one of my favourite hard dance classics. Hard house and techno were the first flavors I was spinning when I started to dj. Tony De Vit was a legend and this is probably my most favorite hard dance tune ever, classic stuff.
16. Temple City Kazoo Orchestra - Kazooed On Classics [Rhino Records.1982]
Save the best for last right.... A perfect example of my awesome musical tastes, lol. A little medley of classics that almost everyone should be familiar with.
