Yes, of course they can. But, unless you're some kind of terrorist who wants to overthrow the government, do you really think bureaucrats want to know how wasted you got Saturday night? In my case, what can the government tell? Oh, look, he's a linguist fascinated by breasts. I'm a guy, so the latter is redundant... and so is the former isn't any more informative, as the government funded my studies.
As for corporations, I wish corporations could spy on me just so I could have some tailor-made products delivered at my door. My privacy is worth those mint biscuits that Nestlé used to sell in the late 90's around here. Also, I'd definitely pay for iced coffee and milk. And I wouldn't mind if I could read the Guardian off-line.

Yea I see what you mean, but one of my issues is I don't like the idea that everything I do or say online is being recorded somewhere. And saved. I don't like having a whole lot of evidence of my past out there somewhere. Even if I know nobody will give a shit enough to look it up, its still there. In a sort of romantic / idealistic sense I'd like to think that I can completley change who I am at any point in time, but having solid records of everything I've done in the past makes that near impossible. Google is far worse in this sense though, and I still use it.
