It's not uncommon...I've seen DJ's as soon as they get on, immediately crank it like its supposed to make them better. At some events in London, we tape the master down so the mixer doesn't get fried or the speakers pop.

I opened for Alex Gaudino 2 yrs ago in London, as soon as he got on, immediately cranked it. He ended up blowing the fuse twice (yes the power source was maxed) but he honestly turned each channel up 2 notches and the master up so the mixer redlined hard. A lot of touring big names have hearing loss thus turn it up
