If you change, are you still you? How big or small of a change? What makes you, you? Personal identity, dammit, what is it?

Fun stuff, with no objective answer, of course. I don't really like your answer, though, Jenny, that somehow there is A person buried underneath all of this garbage. Seems rather teleological, no? Or, suggesting that there is an ultimate 'you' that you are supposed to become. Due to what? I doubt you'll say soul, so I'm guessing genetics? But why are the life experiences we suffer/enjoy, that make observable changes in our personalities, not as real as our genetics/soul/essence? There may indeed be certain people who never change, perhaps who are incapable of change, but can't we agree there are many examples of prominent people who have had dramatic experiences that substantially altered who they were - by altering the intentions/desires/attitudes/beliefs/etc that make us who we are.

Denying people change seems rather myopic.

And in regards to the twin topic, there are plenty of studies that have shown that many things are indeed genetically based, but there are also plenty of things that are not. Nature v nurture, blah blah blah.

Then I don't think neuroscience and psychology will be of much help in figuring out why people do the things they do

More seriously, though, why would a soul be un-malleable by acts? It certainly seems that many of the world religions seem to think that actions can change the state of one's soul. As many have criticized Calvin, if we cannot change our souls, then salvation is a joke and God is a dick (perhaps worded slightly less offensively, but the point remains).

Yes, but it takes LIFETIMES for souls to change, from what I understand. Meaning, a soul won't change significantly or noticeably in any one iteration/lifetime.

But yes I see your point. To counter it though, I would say that souls don't change, they just raise their vibration to where they were always meant to be.

I'm just saying, there's a little light inside all of us. Let's hold hands and pray.

I know you're not serious, but raising a vibration is a type of change

I do think people change a lot as they move from being kids to adults (meaning 25 - 30 or so), mostly becoming more and more like their parents as genetics starts outweighing their childhood environment. After that it seems like they are mostly set in how they will be.

There are always a few mutants and exceptions, though.

And I definitely think many people have certain deep-rooted "tendencies" that will always be with them, even if suppressing them becomes part of daily life.

Yeah yeah. Like I said, I'm just biding my time until the singularity occurs.

The reason people want to believe they can change is because they like the idea that they're in control of their life. The paradox is people will do anything they can to avoid changing themselves.

Not necessarily. I believe people change, yet I don't believe in free will.

yes, they can....they are shaped by their experiences. however, they have certain built in genetic dispositions....but there experiences can end up conflicting with these natural attributes. or...peoples experiences are shaped by their natural tendencies attributes....so experiences can either be manifested into reality by the person's attributes or tendencies..or they can be forced upon them by their surroundings....the ones that are forced upon them tend to change them.....but only to a certain extent...
