On the subject of walking/hiking, here's a question for the North Americans. How safe is it for you to hike while listening to music? In the UK we have no dangerous wildlife, so I can go hiking for 2-3 hours and just stick a DJ mix on the headphones. Is that possible in your national parks?
I always read stuff about bears, and I think I'd be on constant edge if I was hiking in the US or Canada with music blocking out the outside world. But I've no idea if bears are everywhere, if all bears are dangerous, if there's certain times of year to worry about them, etc. |
Yeah, generally speaking, it's not a good idea to mute one of your primary senses when hiking outdoors here, especially if you're going it solo. Depending where you live, rugged wilderness can stretch hundreds of kilometres from one's backyard. Many of our national parks are just sequestered zones of uninhabited land, existing right up to suburban districts (ie: Vancouver's North Shore), with all the wildlife that comes with it. We're mere tenants within Canada's untamed natural splendor.
By and large, you're more likely to run across deer than most other larger animals. Coyotes are kinda' common in major cities, but you can come across wolves in more remote towns. Black bears are usually easily spooked away, provided they haven't just come out of hibernation or have cubs with them. Grizzlies... yeah, you're fucked if they decide to get up in your grill. There've also been occasions of some hikers reporting being stalked by cougars. And don't forget those elusive 'Squatch either!
