Don't get me wrong, I freely share my experiences and know how on a daily basis, but I ain't gonna post my gear list.
I could have bought any mixing board I wanted. For the original topic this thread is about, $270 wouldn't even be considered as somthing decent.
You want my outlook on Mixers???
I was always a Vestax fan. My early 270a was Simple, easy to use, had a front panel RCA which I loved!! It was pretty dependable for about a year and a half. By this time this mixer was well used, knobs on 1 & 3 needed replacement, the pots really loosened up to an uncomfortable "last Leg" feeling but still worked without incident. It seemed to be noisy on really rainy days for some reason(lack of xlr's and multiple post outputs obviously the reason). Then the flood of that 275A came out. Was not pleased with sound quality and was appalled at that lazer P.O.S. R2D2 crossfader the thing had. Breathing on the thing made it move. I remember seeing an ad that said aafter millions of passes on that c/f it worked as new. Like I was really impressed with old optical technology applied to a fader.
I found out prev. that the 275's and later 270's were being made in china. It was omitted off the list.
A handfull of mixers came to the fore front after a couple of months.
Vestax PMC-55 (of course Japanese made)
Pioneer DJM-600
A&H Zone 62
The vestax was similar to my old 270, but had better electronics, multiple XLR's master & booth. The Japanese quality board had everything I wanted but I still wasn't sure.
I tried a Pioneer for the first time in Calgary. I was there on business last summer and discovered that Armin was there also at the same time I was. I didn't get to mix a full set with it, but was involved during the sound check. I didn't ask to assist, but after chatting and drinking Heiny's with the resident DJ and AVBs support team, found myself flattered and honoured to be taking full part in getting this club sounding its best.
When Armin came on and started with his Solarstone - Seven Cities remix (first time I had heard it and can guarantee you never had heard it at this time), I didn't see him complaining. I was not impressed with the Pioneer as it was furnished with more features that I don't use the the ones I do use. The Faders are too short and to further my opinion its loaded with taiwan stomp box qaulity effects, and a beat counter?? You mention previous about THD???? I go to Lexicon for reverb, Eventide for Pitch alteration, flange and delay(well I go with this for EVERTHING!!!) and DBX for compression. I am not to brag because those processors far exceed and surpass the need for DJ'ing but they will tell you were I come from!
At this point I didn't have a clear choice. I then began studing the A&H XonE32, 62, & 464 and after a month decided to check prices and availability. When I heard the price I couldn't believe it! it was cheap !!! Do the research A&H has been involved and specialized in only producing Mixing consoles or related products for live, studio and all mixing enviroments. This is there forte. I ordered it without even listening to it.
Two days later my educated, stressfull and well anticipated yet guttzy choice was in front of me.
Well let me tell you I had really High expectations and would have sent this board back in less than a second if It didn't perform. I have sent stuff back trust me, the sales people don't tell me anything about the products they sell because chances are I know more about there products then they do. In fact they have let me take home $5000.00 processors for my honest, unbiased, educated and professional opinion. Not to mention the fact I will stretch the limits of the device and work it hard the reason you pay 10 times more for it.
Conclusion. The allen & Heath Xone62 mixer is a classic example of no frills quality. The qaulity throughout is stellar. Minor details I have picked out like the rubber wipers on th faders, cushioned rotary knobs, no frills design, input and outputs that allow you to switch from pre to post. It goes on and on. The A&H mixer not only met my expectations but surpassed my expectations with ease. This board has the only things you need, high quality SQ, 4-eq knobs(that I was scared shittless about at first but will never go back)and cleanest output section availble. With my modified amps and NHT's at
home Its easy to hear minor differences. |
Cant argue with that post....Solid.
