Consider him the best until you start listening to the underground. |
This may be true, but among mainstream rap artists eminem fucking owns. Compare him to that no talent hack Jarule?? Eminem has more skill in his pinky finger than fuckin jarule.
For me rap isnt just about lyrics its more about the beats (after all i AM a trance addict), and Eminem tends to have excellent beat selection.

Hmmm.... Eminem. I'm torn.
Some of his lyrics are clever, obviously, but I still fail to see why he's being hailed as such a visionary. Half his songs seem to be about proclaiming how controversial he is, the other half seem to be about how he's being demonized for actually being controversial. And every song has some melodramatic self-pitying in it - you know about how tough his childhood was, about how harsh the critics and censors are and so on. This is where he's gone right though - he pissed off the right people and white pre-teens everywhere found a new way to piss off their parents. Afterall, it must be good music if it pisses off middle-class, conservative America right?
He sells by the bucket-load because he knows exactly how to stir up controversy (and any publicity is good publicity - especially in the music business) and he's been playing off that ever since "My Name Is". He's a lovable, baby-faced wannabe thug - with just the right mix of being "out of control" and expressing regret for being "out of control".
Oh and he's white. Anyone who wants to tell me that he'd be this popular if he was black obviously needs to look a bit deeper into racial politics. I reccomend you all read this article:
http://www.progressive.org/jan03/cobb0103.html
He gives the under-privilaged white youth a role-model in the post grunge world. That's the premise that ensures all the other elements of his personality can be sold in such huge quanitities, and guarantee him being fawned over by MTV and other interested parties looking to seem daring and "on the edge" with the material they wish to play and promote, without actually risking offending anyone or having to delve into politics. For all the talk of Eminem being controversial, I personally do not see it. Nothing he says would in any way risk losing or splitting his key demographic - namely angst ridden teenagers. Saying the word "fuck" or talking about "street level issues" like violence, isolation, despair or anything is not going to offend anyone apart from - as I said before - middle-class white America, and if you can piss them off and cause a stir in the conservative media, you're already half way to endearing yourself to the very people Eminem is trying to win over. If Eminem really wanted to be controversial, why doesn't he speak his mind on genuine political issues? Why doesn't he delve into more complex, divisive issues? He won't, quite simply, because he doesn't want to alienate his audience. For all his pompous parading as a controversial figure-head that everyone loves to hate and would love dearly to bring down, the fact is I cannot think of one thing he's said either publicly or in one of his songs that would piss off anyone in his key demographic.
And that's part of the problem: he has an entire culture in his hands, and the potential to make a massive difference to the society he believes is so wrong and out to get him yet he chooses to sing about himself and his problems with his mother. The acknowledgement of the cold reality of "the streets" (easy to sing about when you're as rich as he is) pretty much exhausts the extent of Marshall's foray into complex political and sociological issues. Why isn't he out there campaining for increased welfare subsidies then? Why has he made absolutely no effort politically to rectify the indifferent, uncaring society he so deeply loathes?
Some musicians have been able to make a massive difference to the age they live in through their music. Eminem just pisses me off with his self-important, self-imposed martyrdom. I have no problem admitting that his lyrics are clever, but that doesn't disguise the fact that he is at best a competent lyricist with the skills of a good salesman, or at worst a shallow, empty pop-star. Clever, perhaps. Genius, certainly not.
