Jack, you did notice that Higuan's goal that you're talking about, wasn't an actual goal? It hit the outside of the net. I agree that it wasn't offside though.

I'm gutted we're out. Before the World Cup had started I wasn't even sure if we were gonna make it to the last 16, but I had become more and more confident after each match. We only have a few world class players of which two have been playing quite bad (van Persie and Sneijder) and way too many inexperienced young players playing in our own country, but I can easily say they've really impressed me. Such a shame they've come this far and they now have to play the suckers final.

On Sunday I'm rooting for the Germans. I've become quite the fan, it started several years ago. If they beat Argentina, I might even buy their away jersey with Kroos on the back. I take watching Kroos delivering passes as straight as an arrow over Messi's dribbles any day of the week.

Lots of people I know have become quite sympthatic towards the Germans (and not just football) over the last few years.

Haha, shit. That's the second time in the tournament this has happened. In the England-Italy game when Sterling rippled the side-netting in the first minute the entire pub went ballistic thinking he'd scored. It took everyone about five minutes to realise we weren't actually 1-0 up. Even the BBC briefly changed the score to 1-0.

Just watched the Higuain "goal" again and you're right, of course. It's the way it drops vertically, it looks exactly like it's gone into the roof of the net. I was so busy looking at the offside on the replay that I didn't actually notice it was the side netting.

Both Holland and Argentina played an immensely boring game. Hope Argentina get their shit together or they'll be slaughtered worse than Brazil.

No chance. They might well lose, and even lose something like 3-0, but they've been very tight at the back all tournament. In fact, that cautious, tight approach is probably the cause of their stifled attacking play, which is unusual given how attack-heavy their squad is but reflects how Sabella has approached this tournament. Keep it tight at the back, play with organisation and rely on isolated moments of brilliance to win matches. In six games they've only conceded three goals, two of which came in their win over Nigeria when they'd already qualified from the group.

The reason Brazil were slaughtered is they were completely gung-ho. Without his two best players Scolari seemed to abandon a cohesive gameplan in favour of trying to win the game on sheer team spirit and will power. He even brought in Bernard to try and whip up the local crowd. Brazil lost so heavily because Marcelo kept rampaging forward and leaving a huge space for Muller, because David Luiz cannot organise his own defensive positioning, never mind the entire team's, and because they all completely lost their heads when they started conceding goals so early having set up to attack, attack, attack.

Germany are definite favourites in the final but it could be a lot closer than you think. Thus far when Germany have played a big team they have scored an early goal which has allowed them to dictate the terms of the game. If Argentina can score first or they continue to keep it tight, things could be very interesting.

Brazil got slaughtered because the German's accuracy and completion of passes is the best in the tournament and not by a small margin.

When you look at the stats, the Germans have made nearly 400 more passes in their games and their completion % is the highest of any team. The next team best team on this front just so happens to be: Argentina

Just look at the goals against Brazil; nearly all of them close pass maneuvers right up to the goal, and totally selfless.

Guess which team had the highest pass % in the last world cup?

Yep. Spain, whose pass % in this tournament was dreadful.

That's a gross simplification. Germany's possession and pass accuracy didn't lead them to slaughter Ghana, the US, Algeria or France. You can pass as accurately as you like but you don't score 7 goals unless the other team opens up to you. I would be massively surprised if Argentina go for the throat, because they haven't done it once in this tournament.

But that's exactly what it was.

The players were so emotional they were crying before the previous games, not afterwards. This alone raised loads of red flags. We made them responsible for the happiness of a country that had just recovered from weeks of social unrest, and there was so much pressure on them I'm surprised the carbon in their bodies didn't turn into diamond already. Crying bystanders just illustrate how much emotional investment was put on them. It was their duty to save the country with one ball, eleven players, and a six billion Real bill to justify their existence.

Losing the star player of the team definitely didn't make things any easier on everyone else, and the proximity to the final match only made things worse. Had this happened in June, I don't think the result would've been so atrocious.

Truth is the game against Colombia was a pyrrhic one. Germany just had to poke us, and we crumbled. Simple as that.
