On the Mets? Mike Jacobs? Well... his nickname throughout his Minor League career has been "Jake the Rake." The kid can hit. There's no doubt about that. If given the opportunity to play everyday for a few years, he'd probably be a .270/.340/.530 type of guy. However, his defense is suspect. He's played a pretty good first base so far for the Mets, but I haven't heard good things about him. He used to be a catcher and he was a mix between Posada and Piazza's worst qualities (Posada's passed balls and Piazza's terrible CS %), so his future is either 1B or DH. He does have one of the sexiest swings I've ever seen. I still don't get why no right handed hitter has a beautiful swing. Only lefties. Weird.

But... compare Alex Rodriguez' swing to Ken Griffey. Or Eric Chavez. There's no comparison. I actually hate Rodriguez' swing, to be honest.

For example... look at Carlos Beltran. A switch hitter. He's a natural Right-Handed hitter. But his lefty swing is GORGEOUS... his righty swing, bland and boring.

I just find it strange...

lefties naturally pull the ball (i know i'm one) thats why a lefthanded batter always has trouble hitting against left hand pitching. But since the majority of pitching is right handed, lefthanded batters tend to see the ball better comin out of a righty. The problem with almost all left handed batters is their front shoulder always tends to open up to 1st base inorder to see the ball (when a left handed pitcher is throwing). This gives anything on the inside half of the plate pretty much home run territory. Any batter that commits to opening their hips in turn opens up their front shoulder will be detrimental on the inside half. You rarely see lefties hitting to the opposite field with power (w/exceptions). With right handed batters its different (don't know not a righty) but it seems that outside pitches to righties allows them to extend their arms versus going short to the ball on an inside pitch.

So you see why a natural lefthanded swing is pretty nice, majority of them live on the inside pitches. Thus in turn opening up the front shoulder and rotating the hips into the swing. That all in one motion by most left handed batters pretty much describes a beautiful swing. (1) short compact swing through the zone (2)rotate hips (3)open front shoulder (4)finish high. where as you see a right handed batter isn't so much dependant on the inner half of the plate. It's more of a longer swing with extended arms. another reason why pitching in to right handed hitters is allowable. you aren't as scared to throw inside as a righty would to a lefty.

And alittle myth about pitching and hitting, a really good pitcher is a really good hitter, a really good hitter is a really good pitcher. How, since you know (study) the swing of batters, you know how to pitch to them better. And as a batter, if you know release points in relative to the type of pitch you already have a 10% advantage. I've been told this since I was a kid, baseball is 90% mental 10% physical. Besides natural talent and size, smarts takes you a whole way. One prime example of this (even though he was a met) is John Franco. I can say he's one pitcher that knows the game inside out, I practiced with him in the summer of 97 at our summer workup sundays. Great guy....
