The cubs are coming on very strong and so are the braves (though they just got swept by the pirates). The braves would worry me if I were a Metobot fan.

Someone wrote a really interesting article in SI about playoff contending teams that, if they made the playoffs, would have the best chance of making the series. The cubs were at the top of that list

Apparently, ever since Moneyball, there's been a huge push to use Jamesianesque stats as a way to predict how well a team would do if it made the playoffs. James always said the playoffs were a crap shoot but people are trying it anyway - the two stats I remember (I think) were strikeouts per walks and a stat that assessed how many runs a defense prevented (Like James' "Range Factor" but applied to the whole team). It was all really theoretical, probably not viable but nonetheless interesting. Thought you might it interesting JerZ.

The article is in the most recent SI I think (the one with Beckham on the cover). You could also google Bill James and pull up tons of interesting stuff. Here's his wiki entry, for example:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_James

If you have some spare time I'd read Moneyball. The book chronicles The A's GM and his hiring of a math wiz from some ivy (who then went on to GM the Dodgers) and asks him to use, modify and build on all these stats Bill James came up in an effort to build a winning baseball team. They end up doing just that, of course, and with practically no money. It's really interesting.

interesting stuff....i've always loved trying to think up stats for what i thought was relevant. i like the runs created stats. seriously, that's the most important thing in baseball.

people rely on circumstantial evidence all the time. Barry's circumstances do not suggest he naturally hit 72 homeruns when he was almost 40. It's just illogical that he was getting stronger as he was getting older. There is no way we are going to get any direct evidence he used steriods.

Personally i can careless about the HR record. I just love baseball and i'm tired of hearing people talk about barry and steroids. Now i'm starting to get pissed because all ESPN talks about on baseball tonight is whether selig goes to the game or not. I have yet to talk to one person who cares.

BTW...i think barry is one of the all-time greats. I wish i could like him, but it's just so hard because he's an absolute prick!

great book. It's funny how one of my friends (a TA actually) is related to Grady Fuson (the assistant GM of the A's from chapter one). He told me that his uncle (Fuson) said not everything was true in the book. I forget exactly what though.
