1) Modplug is freeware and open source, which means I can program my own effects and add my own features.

2) It supports VST.

3) You can code any thing you want in it... there is absolutely no real-time knob-turning or recording required, which makes things easy to edit.

4) I still get great results with it, and it's a high quality prog with a lotta features. Call me old school or w/e, but I just hate having to do recording and real-time tweaking.

Not a goa fan ? Choosing a specific style is an effective way of finding people with similar music taste. I don't think that hinders creativity either. I am a narrow minded person though. No doubt about that

What you describe is easier and more enjoyable. That's what i usually do: screw around. However, the best thing i've done was actually made with something very specific in mind. It was mentally exhausting but the results were a lot better.

well think about it, why did u start producing? as a hobby...hobbies are meant to be enjoyed or else ull become like some cheesy comercial artist out there...

yea u initially cant have the best sound quality for example if u just slack off but hten once u put down the base of ur track jsut on flowing creativity, then u box it into whatever u want. just dont start off with a pre requisite.

Not necessarily. One can find enjoyment in the process of making music, the end result or both. Whatever floats your boat. I enjoy the process of making music (it's euphoric) but usually i don't like the results. In my case, full concentration and hard work would result in better music. No fun during the process of making music but greater satisfaction with the results

A balance of both is best I think... usually I start with melodic and harmonic elements and construct percussion and carrying elements later. Structure comes last, and I usually just kinda figure it out as I go. I'll have a general idea of what I want the end result to sound like, but I don't get stuck on the details until the end. It's easy to change your synths or your drums later in the process, and I alter the structure just the same.

w00t, cheers to that. I grew up on Impulse Tracker and spent a few years with MPT. It takes real compositional skill to mod, you can't just use canned loops and effects. ToM and Necros and Elwood were my music idols... I've moved on, though. The only time I still mod is when I'm working on an instrumental track, which is rare these days...

Ahhh, memories - those were the days, when there was no distinction between genres and everything was techno, which was actually breaks half the time.

I still use it for all my sequencing... then it goes over to Audition for mastering and adding vocals, if desired. I've tried newer software and time and time again, I keep going back to MPT. There have been a lot of improvements recently as well.

I'd love to hear your stuff... any chance u wanna swap some ITs or something?

I can if you like, although none of my mods would pass as dance music (they're all instrumental - in fact the majority were for a game project which fizzled out and I only had the motivation to finish a handful of them ). The most recent would have been about 3 years ago... but hey, if you still wanna hear 'em just give me a shout. I'm happy to send them to anyone, just thought you should know first that they're neither EDM nor are they my finest work.

Everything in the EDM world that I'm actually proud of has been done in fruity or cubase. MPT has come a long way since the old days, that's for sure, but other sequencing software took so much of the tedium away that it's hard to go back. In particular what MPT really lacks is the ability to overlay patterns, unless that's something they recently implemented?
