Maybe I just look at DJing too technically these days and should just accept the fact that its turning into who is the biggest pop star.

Yes, we're all against Tiesto because we're cursing to ourselves in front of our decks and loop programs, thinking nothing but "damn that Tiesto and his popularity!" How ridiculous.

I think Tiesto is an amazing producer, but he definitely does not deserve the title of #1 DJ in the world, and absolutely doesn't deserve it this year as well. I think he's a very good DJ who played well in 2002 -- some of his sets, particularly from that year, are favorites of mine -- but now this is just getting out of control and detached from the reality of his ability.

No, you're wrong. There's no way in hell you could empiricize everyone's ability in a mere list. He deserves it because of his presence and his impact on the global edm community, not on your pseudo-objective technical considerations that would only be relevant if the Top 50 was mostly populated by scratch and dnb djs who really have to show off on the technical skill level, not on the subjective realm of art.

Tiesto joins the hall of fame along with Sasha, Digweed, Carl Cox, Oakey, Tall Paul etc. in being one of the leading voices in electronic dance music of our times. That's all there is to it.

you make a valid poit, but what i think you must relise is that he is no way near as good, technically, as the dj's you've just listed, or for that matter about 70 dj's who finished below him in the top 100.

The fact is that he is top because he is playing the tunes most people want and thats really all there is to it. hes not the best fj in the world, hes the most popular. something this poll fails to distinguish between.

The list doesn't say anything about technical skills. I think that's pretty clear. But I believe Tiesto as a dj is the supreme artist for my taste and appreciation, and so do a lot of people that voted for him. If the poll specified technique, beatmatching, scratching, tricks, double-dropping I would have voted for someone else

I think this is a, wrong and b, makes little sense. Every DJ will play songs that they think the crowd would want to hear. That doesn't mean that you'll constantly play only those tracks that are tried and tested again and again. This won't work either as the people will get tired of it pretty quickly. Seen Tijs 3 times this year. Always fresh, different, special and fun.

Uh, last I checked beatmatching isn't a "pseudo-objective technical consideration."

And he does not deserve it because of "his presence" alone. There are certain minimum technical skills that are necessary for a DJ to qualify for the status he now holds.

And I invite you to point to a single item of worth in the "subjective realm of art" that distinguished Tiesto's sets in 2003.

and this is Exactly the point i'm trying to make.

This poll for people who don't follow it makes tiesto out to be the best in the world. so when someone says to me "that tiesto the best in the business isn't he" of course it's annoying cos there are so many dj's who do not get the recognition they deserve while tiesto is picking up accolades cos so many are blinded by their ignorance of the scene

You're not going to pull the spooky-mystical-magical "Tiesto has special artistic qualities" card. If you do, indicate the ample hand-waving involved in such an explanation.

Then why are you arguing? The whole point of this thread was to point out that technically his Gatecrasher set was complete ass.
