I would just like to say that I have found all of the answers now that I have gotten home from work.

Pizza, beer, friends, techno records, and beer.
Oh, and no work.

No, that was neither explicit nor implied in any of my posts.

They'll only sue the biggest "offenders", where they know that the out-of-court settlement will be substantially greater than their own legal fees.

Way to go, Skip.

interesting read.... will explain most of it to you.... a really good analysis showing how the sales havent really dropped THAT much

the big issue here is that the RIAA is claiming that every download is a lost sale, while this is not neccisarily true, it is very likely that there have been tons of lost sales.... theres jusst simply no easy way to prove it, and just becasue u cant prove it, doesnt mean its not true

also, to whoever said they have all the tiesto cds, wow i applaud u, thats a shit load of money, you must be a huge fan

ive downloaded about 25-28 of his released cds (hes got around 30)and im sooooooooooo glad i didnt pay for them, maybe 2-3 of them are worth the money

Plagiarism is not considered stealing! That's where the problem with your argument lies.

The part of your posted I highlighted - about copying a lab, yes you're right, I would feel ripped. But you know what? There's nothing I can do about it. What he did was not illegal, I can't sue him for it - my answers were my thoughts, they were in the public domain. Was I ripped? Yes. Did he commit a criminal act? No! Plagiarism is against school policies, but it is not the equivalent of "stealing".

Actually, plagiarism is considered stealing only when the original creator of the thought has not been properly recognized.
Plagiarism is alright, but it has to be done properly (which is why we have bloodsucking lawyers to remind us of such things).

If there was some way to footnote intellectual property easily then I guess it wouldn't be such an issue; easy to do in an essay but how does one footnote music while listening to it?

Sharing is what makes the Internet great and that was whole point to begin with when it was first created; sharing I N F O R M A T I O N.
Humans are all about connecting and socializing.
The Internet happens to empower the common person which is where RIAA and the rest have a problem; they are no longer the master of a controllable situation.
They are fighting a loosing battle against a massive congealed body of laypersons and instead of brainstorming to take advantage of the situation they're acting like mastidons in a tarpit; doomed (and they know it).

Why are they continuing with the lawsuits?
Hopefully its going to fund something bigger and better but until that point there will always be the martyrs, leechers and the present day morality commercials (...but you steal satellite signals dad...).

I for one don't condemn file sharing; I'd be a hypocrite if I said I did.
When it comes to music, if the artist is any good I'll support them by either buying the CD or going to see them if they come into town. Is RIAA taking this into consideration when they send me the subpoena???
Should I keep my ticket stubs as Exibit A, B...?
With the recent case of RIAA taking in a grandmother who doesn't even own a computer I'm not going to hold my breath.
I'd really hate to have the responsibility of sorting the lawsuit facts out without the help of....oh....say a CRAY supercomputer and about a 1000 years of spare time...

[edit]
Almost forgot...good debate!

I am so glad I don't use Kazzaa or any programs to get music. I use ftp programs, bittorent (I think they will go after that) and my favourite - newsgroups. I get 3/2 of all my trance music from newsgroups.
I don't think they will go after people who d/l DJ sets because most DJ's realize they are being released and most want there info to get out there.

say i type up a novel i never wrote and put a word.doc on the web, would that be stealing?

say i records tiesto's set and play it in another club (not saying its my own music, but still playing the full rip) is that stealing?

say i put the source code for windows xp on a website, is that legal? (again, not claiming that its my own)

im not attacking anyone or trying to prove anything, I just wanna see where people stand on things like ^^^.

also im assuming stealing/legal are the same thing

Everyone on this board probably has tons of electronic music on their hd's! Now you're not ripping of Warner, or Sony, you're ripping off small labels like Tsunami, Armind, Ajunabeats, ID&T etc etc. These are not wealthy wealthy labels. Many will likely not see through the next ten years, so if you feel justified that you're just evening things out, fine but think again, about the kind of music you're downloading, and then maybe think twice about all those hours spent enjoying the music, and maybe contribute back a little more!

All right, I'm giving up on this argument (Diginut, please keep 'em coming bro), I've got more important things to do than to worry about money grabbing RIAA... like downloading music !

If you write up a lab and give it to your friend to compare and he shares it with everyone in the class who copy your answers and hand it in as their own, don't you feel a little ripped.
Why do you think plagiarism is considered stealing, you're not physically taking anything except the concept of words!

I agree with Aaron, plagerising is NOT stealing. It's taking credit for someone else's work or ideas. Sharing music between people who enjoy is does != stealing as the people who share and download are not taking credit for the artist's own work. In fact why would they even do that anyway? (which is what you had said above Alec.

Oh, I buy CDs ... only the ones worth buying, the rest I download! Actually, pretty much a lot of CDs that I buy are bargain prices, and I dont buy music unless I already checked it out ahead of time or know for sure it's good or something ... Last week I spent about 40 bucks on CDs, got these:

Club Session [1997]
Mauro Picotto - The Double Album [I already have it mainly on MP3s, so whatever!@]
Anne Vissi - Everything I Am [Kylie Minogue mixed with Celine Dion-like stuff ...]
Massive Dance Hits 2001 [for 2 BUCKS! MUHAHAHA ... lots of house music on that]
Expose - Seasons Change [great retro CD]
This is ... HOUSE, Volume 2
Trance Nation 4

A Washington DC court of appeals has just ruled against the RIAA, overturning a lower court's ruling.

According to their ruling, the RIAA cannot force ISPs to divulge their subscribers' personal info.....

I don't know why the Canadian RI would follow this political dead end.

It will only backfire on them when they sue some poor 8 year old in government housing.
