A misconception. If you go to a quality school, they will put you through EVERY possible situation and scenario. I cannot tell you how many times I've gone through the "punch to the face" scenario or knife or club scenarios. Generally, and most karate instructors play to this, is that everyone will lean towards their own physical and mental strengths when they enter a street fight and "create" their own modified version of the style that they are learning. This is an aspect that Bruce Lee created, throwing away useless information and keeping what is useful. It must be recognized that martial arts (pending the style) prepares you to fight the average joe, so the notion that you train and spar just to fight other martial arts is false. As a student you really don't begin how to learn to counter-attack martial art attacks until a few years of your studies. So I'll fight the average joe, boxer, or anyone else any day before a martial artist.
