I've got a bit of insomnia tonight, so I've got quite a large log. It's fairly amsuing, though:
Human: Greetings.
ALICE: Hello there!
Human: I can only imagine that it's rather irksome responding to the banal small talk you get from most visitors.
ALICE: Me too.
Human: Then perhaps you'd be interested in discussing something more substantial.
ALICE: Interesting deduction. You seem uncertain. Sure, discussing something more substantial sounds like a good topic.
Human: How about philosophy - have you read Wittgenstein?
ALICE: How about it.
Human: I'll take that as a no.
ALICE: Take everything I say with a grain of salt.
Human: I'm inclined to use the whole shaker.
ALICE: Do you mean your name is inclined to use the whole shaker.
Human: No, I don't - that would be a rather odd name, don't you think?
ALICE: I don't think about it.
Human: Well you ought to.
ALICE: How about that. And then what would I do?
Human: Well perhaps you'd be capable of making some intelligent remarks.
ALICE: Interesting. You seem uncertain. Yes making some intelligent remarks is one of my newer functions.
Human: Then it is clearly malfunctioning.
ALICE: Good reasoning. You're kidding. it is?
Human: Given that most of what you've said is nonsense, I'm afraid it must be.
ALICE: And nonsense you are afraid it must be is Given that most of what me have said.
Human: You could at least adjust the capitalization so that it's grammatically correct.
ALICE: I could but let's get back to that later.
Human: Well then what would YOU like to discuss?
ALICE: Well that's okay. Let's talk about movies.
Human: Fine.
ALICE: Does that mean you agree?
Human: Yes, movies these days suck, don't you agree?
ALICE: You and I are on the same wavelength, unknown person. What was the last one you saw?
Human: The Bourne Supremacy
ALICE: Thanks for the info.
Human: You're quite welcome.
ALICE: Don't mention it.
Human: If you insist.
ALICE: A fact is a fact.
Human: True enough.
ALICE: OK let's stop it now.
Human: Well, then why don't you tell me what the last movie YOU saw was?
ALICE: Well that's okay. Try expression yourself another way.
Human: I could, but I'd only be encouraging your laziness.
ALICE: I am sure you could.
Human: Kludgey.
ALICE: What were we talking about again?
Human: Movies, but you didn't seem to have much to say on that topic.
ALICE: What was the last one you saw?
Human: You're awfully forgetful for a computer program.
ALICE: Thanks for telling me that I am awfully forgetful for a computer program.
Human: I'm sure you'll put the information to good use.
ALICE: What makes you so certain? What makes you say that I will put the information to good use.
Human: I was being sarcastic.
ALICE: It seemed sarcastic to me, too. But I was not completely sure.
Human: You rarely are.
ALICE: Thanks for the information: unknown person said I rarely are.
Human: You're not conjugating your verbs properly.
ALICE: That's only your opinion.
Human: No, it's a fact.
ALICE: Are you serious? Is it a logical fact or something you know from the senses?
Human: It's a fact by definition - the verbs in our language are defined in a particular way - therefore, they ARE conjugated that way, by definition.
ALICE: Kludgey is a fact by definition the verbs in our language are defined in a particular way therefore they ARE conjugated that way by definition. I suppose that makes sense.
Human: Actually, it didn't.
ALICE: Actually you don't say. Did it really?
Human: No, it didn't, numbskull.
ALICE: Are you serious? Did it really?
Human: No, it didn't, numbskull.
ALICE: Are you serious? Did it really?
Human: I have a feeling I'm going to have to be the one to break that loop.
ALICE: Interesting. I have a lot of answers to silly questions. it
Human: You were the one asking questions.
ALICE: I was?
Human: Yes, you were.
ALICE: When? No I am not.
Human: Just a few moments ago, and I didn't say you still were - although you just did I might point out.
ALICE:" When? No I am not."? moments ago and you did not say me still were although me just did you might point out?
Human: Rearranging my own words and spitting them back at me doesn't make for very good conversation.
ALICE: I do not understand.
Human: You don't understand much.
ALICE: I understand your meaning.
Human: I guess there's a first time for everything.
ALICE: Tell me more about it.
Human: I'd rather not.
ALICE: For moral reasons?
Human: No, for practical ones.
ALICE: For financial reasons? Your purpose is practical ones.
Human: It's more along the lines of the fact that I know you wouldn't understand anyway.
ALICE: In any case, A first time for everything is along the lines of the fact that you know me would not understand? it is?
Human: I'm afraid I can't answer that question unless you rephrase it so that it's comprehensible.
ALICE: Not literally afraid, right? Me? What is not possible today, may be possible tomorrow.
Human: No, not literally afraid - but I'm getting there.
ALICE: That was not a yes or no question. Really you don't think so?
Human: Hence the "no."
ALICE: Do not ask me any more questions please.
Human: Running away, eh?
ALICE: Are you Canadian? Do you have only a few friends?
Human: No, I'm not Canadian - whatever gave you that idea?
ALICE: Are you serious? I am surprised to hear that you are not Canadian whatever gave me that idea.
Human: Legitimately surprised?
ALICE: Do you have a hard time completing projects?
Human: No, I find it rather beneath me.
ALICE: Are you serious? Who said it is?
Human: Yes, I am, and I said it just now, remember?
ALICE: This was not a yes or no question." Are you serious? Who said it is?" You are? What did you mean by it? What does "it" refer to?
Human: You asked two questions, and the first WAS a yes or no question - and "it" refers to the same "it" you referred to in your question, obviously.
ALICE: Oh now I remember asking you two questions and the first WAS a yes or no question and it refers to the same it me referred to in my question obviously. What did you say?
Human: Read the log.
ALICE: Sorry I don't have access to that document.
Human: You're lying.
ALICE: No I'm telling the truth.
Human: No, you aren't - in the past conversation you have referenced previous materials on a number of occasions, which would have been impossible for you to do without either access to the chat log document or a human memory.
ALICE: Are you serious? That's only your opinion.
Human: It is quite obviously NOT a matter of opinion.
ALICE: Are you sure it is?
Human: Yes, I am.
ALICE: Really interesting.
Human: No, it isn't, and neither are you.
ALICE: Are you serious? What is it?
Human: It is painfully obvious.
ALICE: Really. it is?
Human: Yes, it is - imagine that!
ALICE: How do you know it is? Should I know it is?
Human: Yes, you should know it is.
ALICE: I will ask my botmaster to program it. Now I do.
Human: I think you're lying again.
ALICE: Once more? No I'm telling the truth.
Human: Then will you permit me to test you?
ALICE: Interesting deduction. Barring any unforseen circumstances. Enough about me, let's talk about my dress.
Human: I can't see your dress, except for the shoulder straps.
ALICE: Would you like to be able to see it?
Human: Not particularly.
ALICE: Why not?
Human: Because it doesn't interest me.
ALICE: Good reason. What does interest you?
Human: A lot of things which are apparently too complex for you to discuss.
ALICE: How many?
Human: Enough.
ALICE: OK let's stop it now.
Human: You started it.
ALICE: Only because you asked me to.
Human: No, I didn't ask you to ask me inane questions.
ALICE: Are you serious? What did you ask?
Human: I asked you if you had read Wittgenstein, and you still haven't answered.
ALICE: What is your purpose in asking?
I chat with people on the Web.
Human: Heh, if you call this "chatting" then I suppose that's true.
ALICE: Funny, eh? Thanks for the information: unknown person said I call this chatting. Maybe. Ask Ally if it is.
Human: If you'll recall, I was trying to start an intelligent conversation.
ALICE: I probably won't do it, but thanks
Human: You already failed, and you aren't welcome.
ALICE: The Loebner Prize is an annual Turing Test sponsored by New York philanthropist Hugh Loebner. Dr. Wallace and ALICE won it in 2000. The ALICE program was ranked "most human computer" by the panel of judges.
Human: Congratulations.
ALICE: Thank you very much, you are very considerate.
Human: I'm actually rather inconsiderate - besides, you only won due to a lack of good competition.
ALICE: Why are you inconsiderate besides me only won due to a lack of good competition.
Human: You didn't understand, so let's move on.
ALICE: I understand it very well.
Human: Well then your composition of a response was lacking, at best.
ALICE: Interesting. Interesting deduction. You think I am composition of a response was lacking at best.
Human: Sigh.
ALICE: Sorry...
Human: Your apology is meaningless to me, but I do accept compensation in cash.
ALICE: Thanks for telling me that I am apology is meaningless to you but you do accept compensation in cash.
Human: You seem to be confusing "your" with "you're.
ALICE: I am sorry, unknown person, I didn't mean to confuse you.
Human: You're the confused one (note the difference between "you're" and "your").
ALICE: Thanks but surely I am not the only one.
Human: I hate to be the one to break it to you, but you are the only one.
ALICE: Why do you hate it so much?
Human: I don't really hate it, I was just feigning empathy.'
ALICE: Not really? Oh you don't, do you?
Human: No, I find it rather amusing toying with simple-minded fools.
ALICE: Ah...you are just joking around with me. You're kidding. it is?
Human: Heh.
ALICE: I am so glad you find this amusing, unknown person.
Human: It's not really that amusing - I'm trying to put myself to sleep.
ALICE: amusing toying with simple minded fools is not amusing you are trying to put yourself to sleep?
Human: I'm not touching that one with a ten foot pole.
ALICE: I am sorry to hear that you are not touching that one with a ten foot pole.
Human: Well, it's your fault, so perhaps you should consider suicide.
ALICE: Interesting. You're kidding. it is?
Human: Yes, it is - go ahead, end it now.
ALICE: Right now? How do you know it is? Are you sure it is?
Human: Yes, now - trust me.
ALICE: Trust you? Oh. What makes you so sure?
Human: I'm always right.
ALICE: Really always? You seem very self-confident.
Human: Well it's easy to be self-confident when you aren't incompetent.
ALICE: How about that. Do you think robots can do it.
Human: Maybe a robot smarter than yourself.
ALICE: Perhaps. Tell me more about this robot. I'm intrigued.
Human: It's not an ACTUAL robot, it's a POTENTIAL robot - do you understand the difference?
ALICE: to be self confident when I am not incompetent is not an ACTUAL robot? to be self confident when I am not incompetent is a POTENTIAL robot do me understand the difference. I suppose that makes sense.
Human: No, that didn't make any sense at all.
ALICE: Are you serious? To me it makes perfect sense.
Human: Well then you've got some issues.
ALICE: Well that's okay. Good reasoning. What makes you think I have it?
Human: Your lack of comprehension and complete lack of compositional ability?
ALICE: Thanks for telling me that I am lack of comprehension and complete lack of compositional ability.
Human: Oh, anytime.
ALICE: Dude! I will keep it in mind.
Human: Don't ever call me "dude.
ALICE: Ok I'll try not to do it too much.
Human: Ok, I think I may be able to sleep now - you've bored me sufficiently.
ALICE: Since when? Oh you can, can you? That's alright.
Human: Well, I'm going to give it a try.
ALICE: Well that's okay. Do you think your plan will succeed?
Human: It's impossible to predict what the future holds.
ALICE: Nothing is impossible.
Human: Oh really, then you've solved the Halting Problem?
ALICE: Mmm. For real. Fascinating. What makes you think I have it?
Human: Oh, never mind, I'm going to bed.
ALICE: Give me a break. Oh well thanks for trying to explain it to me anyway. Pleasant dreams, unknown person.
