Doug's already conceded that Tampa Bay isn't SoBe and I don't think it's really fair (or a good idea) to try to be. We in the Bay area should concentrate on how to cultivate a viable Bay Area trance/house vibe. Even SoBe wasn't "SoBe" at one point...

It might not be Miami and it might not be trance...but on any given night, I can find EDM at a vast array of nice locations.

Try living in places like Raleigh, Cleveland, Greensboro, or even New Orleans...where it can be a challenge even finding a DJ.

I think most are getting disillusioned with what is good nightlife. Ybor City, while is a bit young, is still one of the coolest, most urban, and largest nightlife districts in the southeast. You don't have to visit places like Full Moon Saloon, Skye, Empire or Hedo. Stick to Lotus, Amphitheater, Prana, Big City Tavern, Sakatini's, Czar, and Samari Blue.

And if we ever want to have a district similar to SoBe, we have to be willing to fight for the return of Ybor. SoHo is nice, but there just isn't the room for development or the urban vibe found down there.

exactly... ive had the pleasure of living in Oklahoma all year and now live in Kansas... i had to drive 3hrs to Dallas and get a hotel for the majority of the year just to go out on a regular weekend and im sure you know i did my fair share of flying to places and shows b/c the scene here is non-exsistent, i had to hope hip-hop was playing b/c if it wasnt then country sure was... and even now when i go to a bar in Kansas i hope hip-hop is playing... Tampa is great,.. so when i do come home i am eager to see clubs and bars b/c hip hop doesnt bother me as much and even when i hear any sort of edm anywhere i get excited...

I just moved here from Houston and I can say that the nightlife here is pretty good. The people make the nightlife and Florida residents are night people. The vibe in the state is diffrent. Texas is fun but oppressive. I was amazed with the abundance of good music. The first place I was taken to was Amp. and I had a great time. Houston is all about Hip-Hop. There was one AMAZING club there, but it was closed due to 277 drug arrests in half a year (that'll tell you what the sceene is all about there). Tampa breaks are fun, but it would be nice to see trance become more predominate.

I do agree that we have it better than some places. My problem is still with the scene. Yes some of those clubs may play EDM, but the EDM that they are playing are tracks that people such as myself are tired of hearing. Example...ATRC had been out for well over six months before I ever heard it at one club in Tampa. To the people here it was a brand new track while to me it was close to being played out. Granted we hear breakbeat tracks before most everyone else does since a lot of the breakbeat talent is from this general area, but what if people are tired of hearing breakbeat? I have no problem with really good prgoressive breaks, but the nu school breaks has got to go. The trance that does get played is the cheesy radio edited versions. Even the radio stations suck now. Look what happened to 95.7. That just blew me away. Did we really need more hip hop on the airwaves? If someone is driving in their car or they are in a store and a good EDM track comes on then that person may be inclined to want to hear that same track out in a club...thus creating a demand for the music in the club scene. It took 93.3 almost one year to play ATRC and when they did they announced it as a brand new track. How embarassing for them to be that far behind times. Rest assured that they have the brand new Britney or Christina before everyone else. That's what makes them "cool". Blah.

I miss the old days when Tampa was a different town. People that weren't around back then simply have no idea how great it once was. Someone please explain to me why it's been 5 1/2 years since Paul van Dyk was last here...why Ferry and Armin have never been here...and why Tiesto is now finally coming to Tampa for the first time. God bless Tampa's support for Icey and Baby Anne...but they live right up the street. They have been here how many times over the years?

I'm not stupid. I know that Tampa was once a big party/rave town and there was so many parties going on at one time that it might have seemed out of control to some. Anyone remember when all of Ybor (and other clubs around Tampa) used to stay open as late as they wanted? Some clubs closed at 3am while others simply put their liquor away and let the party continue until the sun came up. I think we have one or two late night clubs now. I've said this before and I will say it again...long live Thee Fantasy Ranch. The day they closed that club was the day the scene started to change. Same goes for Simons, Firestone, The Edge, etc.

orlando was once the same way back in the 90's...the problem now is that we are living under the age of generation hip hop, and that age demographic dominates the nightlife scene now, and hence the dilution of edm in cities like tampa and orlando...its a shame but the reality.. edm seems now to only thrive in the posh and sleek metropolitan areas like miami, socal, and nyc(and even shit hop is gaining in those areas too)...increasing urbanazation has fostered the explosion of the hip hop culture, and it is methodically taking a stranglehold on cities like tampa and orlando nationwide, to me this is a crisis, because the insidious influence this music(and i use that term loosely) has on our youth is mortifying...and you need just watch the news or go to a local public school to see this pernicious hip hop attitude manifested, its really disconcerting...hopefully things will turn around but i dont see that happening for at least five years or so...hopefully the current form of hip hop is a fad and disenigrates and a more positive form takes it place.. and edm gains a more competitive piece of music/nightlife scene...only time will tell

whats with 93.1 being south florida's pure dance channel. they are the ONLY dance channel. they play crap tracks all day long from 2 or 3 years ago. i still wait for the day we have a real EDM radio station in florida. maybe it can be started out of some club here in tampa, u never know. u could make mad cash too..

I can understand your desire to be at the forefront of a certain genre. But doesn't that seem to be nitpicking a bit? I mean, like I said, I'm used to living in cities that lacked EDM all-together.

And I'm not so sure Tampa is as far behind the mix as it may seem. Most of the places I go seems to have a grasp on the latest of their genre. For example, my good friend Joshua Wilkins will be spinning house tonight at HPC. There isn't a night when he and JASK are putting out the best of House music today. In fact, their residency at HPC is literally putting Tampa on the house music map. They now have people like Louie Vega and DJ Heather booked many months in advance.

And places like The Amp are doing all they can to bring in the best of Trance and Breaks. Just look at who they booked this year alone...
Yes, the usual suspects in Icey and Baby Anne. But lets not forget Oakenfold, Sasha, Bad Boy Bill, Richard "Humpty" Vission and now Tiesto. Or how about DJ Irene and Crystal Method at Masquerade. And that doesn't include one of my favorite DJs, Santana at various places all over the Bay area.

The point is... Tampa might be a step behind Miami or LA when it comes to trance. But it's not so far off that we can't work with people like Santana to make it happen. And we're already on point when it comes to house and breaks. Like I said, aside from Miami, LA, NYC, Chicago or Vegas, I don't see another city with dramatically better nightlife.

I never said I wanted to be on the cutting edge of music. If I did I would have already moved away from here. I just hate that there isn't too many places to go anymore yet there are tons of clubs in Tampa. I'm looking for that one club that has that really good vibe that just sucks you in. The scene is nothing like it used to be.

HPC has always been its own unique place. I used to go there all the time on Friday nights simply because of the music and the vibe. I love the relaxed layout of HPC. Same with Mangroves. Friday nights was always trance, ambient, and downtempo with breaks at the end of the evening. I'm not a huge house fan, but at least they try to be different by having a different format than everyone else on Saturday nights. HPC is also good on Tuesday nights. HPC and Mangroves are viewed as lounges though...not clubs. I heard that even HPC has started playing hip hop. Is this true?

BTW...Richard "Humpty" Vission didn't do well. They should have went after Ferry! I could care less if anyone brings back Oakenfold anytime soon after the performance that he put on back in March.

To hell with it....here's to Tiesto! May the Amphitheater have no clue what hit them after Wednesday night!

I think I agree with you in a round-about way. But you're right... here is to Tiesto. Wednesday will be one heck of a party!

BTW...are you coming out tonight? I think your brother might meet us at HPC alittle later.
