trance is a theory based on the idea that a person engaged by repititions will be taken to a special mind state that reflects those repititions.

it isnt acid, supersaws, armin, oliver lieb, age of love, or any of that, one could even argue that is doesnt have to be music.

trance is kinda a bullshit term for a genre of music, any kind of repetititve music can create a trance. A radical change in the sound can still be called trance, because trance isn't a genre of music, it is a state of mind that is created by music.

the only 2 requirements for trance are
1)repitition
2)people that like it

Back in the day, when all the 'trance' that people look back to find and find themselves missing was made, there was no trance genre, the word trance was used in this way to desribe the mindstate as opposed to a genre of music.

I have no trouble finding unique trance at all, but then again I am working with the traditional definition. But still, alot of the tunes I hear fit in perfectly with a trance set by most standards, and they dont all sound the same to me.

Herein begins gibber 2:

reason why trance songs sounds similar : the supersaw

reason why the supersaw persists : it is good

reason why the supersaw is good : a number of reasons

1) supersaw is harmonically very rich, i.e. nice and fat and full, perfect for a lead melody
2) supersaw contains lots of harmonics and thus high-frequencies, which is pyschologically linked to euphoria -> peaking -> gurning etc. i.e. one of the basic reasons people listen to uplifting trance
3) supersaw contains lows of harmonics, therefore responds very well to filtering, giving it character. Trance has always involved a lot of filter-work, making it very dynamic and emotional.

So yeah, I reckon trance is about supersaws, not just hypnosis. And the guys earlier who said trance was about acid lines not supersaws, yeah well the acid sounds pretty much fit the same bill, supersaws are just a natural evolution of that sound ( but used differently )
