Martha Hall Findlay, the Newmarket lawyer who narrowly lost to Conservative Belinda Stronach in the 2004 federal election, has been acclaimed the Liberal nominee in Newmaket-Aurora for an election that could be called within the next few weeks.
Ms Hall Findlay, who lost to Ms Stronach by 689 votes last June, was nominated last Friday by the Newmarket-Aurora federal Liberal riding association.
And she lost no time making comparisons between herself and the former CEO of auto parts giant Magna International.
"I understand the challenges facing the people of Newmarket-Aurora," she said following the nomination.
"I know what it's like to worry about mortgage payments, about university tuition, about not spending more than you have coming in. I do understand what it takes to balance work, family and community contribution."
A corporate lawyer, Ms Hall Findlay founded a legal consultancy service, the General Counsel Group.
She returned to Newmarket, where she lived for a number of years, from Collingwood last year to accept the Liberal nomination.
She and her team are ready if an election is called, she said.
"If Belinda and (Tory leader) Stephen Harper want to force Canadians into an election now, we're ready for it," she said.
"We'll be armed with policies that even Belinda acknowledges are good for the people of Newmarket-Aurora."
