I second that one.
When relationships end, and the girlfriend/boyfriend is close to the best friends, the possiblities for taking sides, gossip, keeping information from one another, etc is present. Blaah ...

OMG I SO know what you're talking about!!! Honesty is the best policy here, because once you've let them know where you met these two awesome people, you've paved the way for more friends that you will hopefully meet and care about in the same way!

I got stuck with this when I had to explain where I was going with my fiancee the first time I went to Waterloo, and then when I was going to Montreal this past weekend to meet with other TAs...but when your parents/loved ones see how happy you are when you get back, they will surely understand!

OMG you are so right about this...I was burned a couple of times because of this...not only re: what happens AFTER a break up but it could also be the CAUSE of a break up

These are very tough questions to answer...

I think a good question to ask yourself to help judge how good of a friend you are (speaking in general terms here) is to ask if you were there and did everything you could, or think of when it really mattered and they could have used your help. This question can be applied to many different situations and scenario's so view this as a vague rhetorical question.

As for when to stop being friends, I think once you start thinking about it yourself is when you should really start asking yourself serious questions as to whether or not the friendship posses alot of qualities that come along with a good and wholesome friendship. Having said this, it's extremely tough to completely eliminate people from your life that have been there for a long time. Maybe limit the amount of time you spend with and be careful about the times and situations in which with you spend with such friend.

that's a pretty deep thought there, slingy.

the way i look at it is this way. i always give 110% to all people in terms of friendship. if i can help anyone in anyway, i will. but there is only so much a person can do, then it's up to the other person. i sometimes feel let down and figure my efforts are for nothing. but in all honestly, i will do the same thing over again.

as long as you know you have tried to be a good friend...that's all that really matters. If the person is not appreciative of that..then they obviously dont deserve have you as a friend.

Thanks Marg for letting me stand where u were in line for the bathroom at BEB....you are a great friend

This thread makes me think of the starburst commercial where he pisses off his friends so he won't have friends to have to share his starbursts with them.

Placebo - Pure Morning

A friend in needs a friend indeed,
A friend with weed is better,
A friend with breasts and all the rest,
A friend who's dressed in leather,

A friend in needs a friend indeed,
A friend who'll tease is better,
Our thoughts compressed,
Which makes us blessed,
And makes for stormy weather,

A friend in needs a friend indeed,
My Japanese is better,
And when she's pressed she will undress,
And then she's boxing clever,

A friend in needs a friend indeed,
A friend who bleeds is better,
My friend confessed she passed the test,
And we will never sever.

if this friendship is shitty because of something situational in someones life (rough time with something...not so good of a friend) and this friend was/is worth it, sometimes you gotta stick it out and put up with some bullshit. however if hes just an asshole all the time (dispositional), and you are tired of putting up with it, then its time for some distance.
