I'm thinking of getting ableton too..

i mean.. if all of these pros are doing it, it must mean something good.

I've seen what sasha can do with ableton and it totally blew me away. I'm not the kind of DJ worshipper who "looks at the DJ and see when the next buildup is"

Anyone can jump on the dj booth clapping to "traffic". Anyone can start doing the jesus stance to "communication"

The only crowd interaction i want involved with the dj is when the crowd gives a round of applause for a hell of a show.

LOL most of you don't get it. You will not be able to Replicate what sasha does.

Look at eddie halliwell for example, one of the most freindly and interactive DJs in the world, hes almost made a trademark out of stage diving at gigs ffs (not a thing u typicaly see djs gettin away with)

BUT, his mixing and track selection are still great, he still rocks the crowd, and he doesnt need to be playing 6 tracks at once, yet iv seen him get a crowd into a complete frenzy

if i went to see an ableton DJ and he/she was just fidling about on a Mac instead of making any contact with the crowd i think id get bored, to be fair half of the time you wont be able to tell what there doing anyway itl be so polished....

I know. It's not like I can afford to pay someone to do edits for me, like I'm told Sasha does (I'm told it's Paul Rogers @ Sumsonic).

You also probably can't get producers to send you the separate parts of tracks.

Not necessarily. You can still re-edit, create mashups and add elements to a song, all in realtime. And you still have to put Warp markers to the files (Ablton does not detect tempo 100% automaticly), wich for me usually takes longer then beatmatching on turntables.
Also. I belive that in not so distant future you will be able to buy elements from tracks. Gabriel & Dresden have said that they are thinking about releasing track elements for Ableton users on Organized Nature.

So you think djs out there will be able to do this on the fly and make it sound good?

99% of this is going to probably be done before the DJ even gets there anyway. Then the question gets asked why do you even need a DJ?

In the next version of Live (version 5) it will be easier to do all this on the fly. In fact, version 5 will feature a special mashup feature.

I've been told Surgeon has been doing all this on the fly and I'm also told it sounds very good. I not 100% sure about this, but I will find out next month when he does a gig here.

The biggest advantage I see today for dj's that can't afford to get someone to re-edit for them or get seperate elements from tracks is that you can do transformations you could never be able to do with 2 turntables and a mixer.
