Bleep 115: Trevor Wilkes

Bleep 115
Aired: June 19th, 2008
Mixed by: Trevor Wilkes (CA) / Fun in the Murky / Bleep Radio

I tried to make sure and grab each track in this mix from a section of shelf that I haven't picked through in a while. For the first time it actually worked. I always end up cherry picking some of the stuff I play more often, but that didn't happen this time. So aside from the newest 3d!t EP every record is something that's been hiding for a year or two on me. There is definitely some killer stuff I wish I could play more often. Curse only being able to play 20-30 at a time!

This week's Bleep seems to have acquired a slight mid 90's vibe to it. I blame it on the Ferox early on in the mix. That always pushes me in that direction.

Bleep 117: Andrez Bergen

Bleep 117
Aired: July 3rd, 2008
Mixed by: Andrez Bergen (Australia/Tokyo) / Myspace

Andrez Bergen, better known as Little Nobody, is an expatriate Australian journalist, some-time musician, photographer, DJ, occasional illustrative pencil-pusher, one-time filmmaker, writer, wayward graphic designer, and an ad hoc beer connoisseur, formerly from Melbourne, who's been entrenched in Tokyo, Japan, for almost 7 years now. In most respects %28aural and visual%29, Andrez likes to steal furtive glances in a pseudo-metaphysical rear-vision mirror, greedily brushing up on the "found art" chapter of the Dadaists' handbook; he then plagiarizes heavily from the cut-up techniques of Brion Gysin and Tristan Tzara, nicks the deconstructive tendencies of post-modernism in jaded new ways, and casts a sardonic eye on the industrial music splice 'n' dice ideology of Cabaret Voltaire in the '70s - all the time stimulated by Marcel Duchamp's display of a toilet urinal back in 1917.

on.. Myspace, Discogs

Andrez has only recently cropped up on my radar. His wide spread tastes and exceedingly friendly nature made it an easy call with regards to asking him to do a Bleep show.

This weeks' show was slightly rushed. In getting it together and in actually airing the show. Bleep 119: Dj Loz

Bleep 119
Aired: July 17th, 2008
Mixed by: Dj Loz (UK) / No Data Available

Bleep 119 is a good'un. Dj Loz has concocted what he believes to be his best mix to date. Now I haven't heard every one he's ever done, but I do know that it's a great mix. Variety of timbre, age of release and style plus Loz' great taste for things which age very well (ie. Classics new and old) makes it one of those shows I think we're lucky to have.

From Acid to Detroit with side excursions into other realms, this is a decent enough representation of where my head was at 5+ years ago. Toss in a bit of Chi-town and some minimal bleep funk and you'd be squared off with the stuff that snared me.

I did have a slightly more mellow show planned, but then an order arrived. New Coin Op, Bombtrap, etc all arriving at once means everything else goes out the window. Dj Mem also saw fit to snail mail me a copy of Nasty Colour 7 which as you may recall I was raving about when I posted it. My opinion still stands on it. Class EP! Since I'm on a bit of a mid 90's Techno trip down memory lane as well I grabbed some stuff off the shelves that some of you may remember. Advent, before...well...whatever it is The Advent does now and other stuff that was heavily influenced by the Detroit and/or the Swedish crowd.

Look forward to Leon Segka's show which he should be finishing off soon and The Donk Boys just offered up a live-set as well. The coming weeks should be good!

Bleep 122: Donk Boys

Bleep 122
Aired: August 7th, 2008
Mixed by: Donk Boys (SE) / Myspace

The Donk Boys consists of Martin Abrahamsson and Thomas Jaldemark, both hailing from Sweden. I originally met Martin around the time of their first Donk Boy release via one of the TSR boys who knew him in person -presumably because they lived in Malmo for a period at the same time.

Ever since that chance encounter I've been very thankful to TSR Tomas for telling me about the Donks as I've come to really enjoy their sense of rhythm and the timbrel palette they use. Mostly of course because it's all a 2nd wave rehash of DBX and .Xtrak style bleep and glonk tracks. Only in spirit though, they do have their own angle on things and they do it very well. I know of no one else that can do what they're doing as well as they're doing it. Which I think shows through whenever I write something about a set or release of theirs.

Needless to say I was very elated to find an email from Thomas last week asking me if I wanted to use a freshly recorded live set for Bleep Radio. I hope you enjoy the set/show.

Next Weeks Show: Unknown at this time.

Bleep's goal is to bring quality dance-floor music, music without it's head up it's arse, to areas where it's seemingly lacking. Stale music has taken over and needs to move over. Variety is one component of Bleep, but only one of many. Look forward to hearing many forms of Electronic music with labeling of the sub-genres firmly ignored. We need less labels, not more. Techno is the label that Bleep assumes, but it's the Techno label of days gone by...with a sense of humour.

Everyone is highly encouraged to ask questions or comment about Bleep mixes. All questions will be answered. Help will be given. Direction will be shown.

For those of you who wanted something a little harder....Here you go.

Admittedly I sorta faded out on the end. The last three tracks were the result of me not having stuff picked out in advance and I had to use what was on hand already. I'm pretty sure, because of the mood I'm and the records in the mail, that the next few Bleeps will be ball-busters.

Bleep 125: Subhead Tribute

Bleep 125
Aired: August 28th, 2008
Mixed by: Mike Holmes (UK) & Trevor Wilkes (CA) / Fun in the Murky / Bleep Radio

Subhead is one of the names responsible for me 'getting into this stuff'. When I first started record shopping, and had nothing in mind for it other than wanting to own some good music, the local record store owner quickly realized my tastes were for the more odd. He threw me a Subvoice record and a Subhead record to go with my already confirmed tastes in Chicago and Detroit. From that point on I was hooked.

It's been several years since Phil and Jason worked together as Subhead, but their legacy lives on and their solo work still shines above most of the rest. Jason will continue to wow us all with the breadth of stuff he can do and I always look forward to each new EP. Phil, unfortunately, passed away almost a year ago. His Dj Sueme material, Dot Com label and the multitude of people who had respect for him will keep it weird on his behalf though.

This episode of Bleep Radio was Mike Holmes' idea. he gave me his segment of it way tooo many months ago to even remember straight. Sorry it took so long to get my arse in gear and finish it off. I hope you all dig what Mike and I put together.

Track-list:
00 - 3d!t "Bleep Radio Intro"

Bleep 126: Cain

Bleep 126
Aired: September 4th, 2008
Mixed by: Cain (Malta)

Cain was a guest way back in August of 2006. Ever since then he's had the offer of doing another show, but it wasn't until just this month he was finally able to tear himself away from his busy life in Malta to record something new. For the last few years now Malta's Techno scene has been eating up the skew-whiff Techno like an unhealthy addiction and Cain --amongst others-- has been doing his best to help further that into something even more.
