ARIA isnt what it used to be

I gonna have to agree with that 100%. From my first time at Aria(PVD) a while back compared to the last few times ive been to Aria its as if Im walking into a different club. Honestly I prefer Aria back in the day because I remember there was a special vibe especially when the big names came. Now days even with big names its not the same vibe, im not saying its a bad vibe but there is something missing. The only night I can say I really thought the vibe was cool was at Infected Mushroom and thats the last time I was at Aria. Im not sure if something is dying or just changing in Montreal but hopefully its just a change.

Sure, as Sarah points out.. there are smaller, hidden venues that are pumping out the sounds both in Toronto and MTL.. but I find Toronto(since I live here) is run by a monopoly of people...and if you're not known by any of these select few... u're an OUTSIDER...and feel weird, even simply attending one of these intimate parties. Everyone there seems to know each other.
People group together like schoolyard children and it makes the scene ..real unaccepting. This is what I've noticed here in Toronto. Even going as far as not too book dj's who spin in a certain venue that is not one of theirs. You virtually get 'blasklisted'..from them.
I remember when MTL "was" the place for Techno in Canada... and I also remembe talking to Louis about this very thing not too long ago..and he told me that it was on a decline in the city. Came as a big shock to me.
House is the grandaddy of EDM and will always be around.. i'm positive. Everything has it's time. Techno's will come soon .. again. Hopefully... it'll make big moves in Toronto. |
It's unfortunate you feel this way about the TO techno scene, because I think it's APPEAL is the fact that it is intimate. there is a core group of techno lovers that does not convert to electro or house when things get stale, they either patiently wait it out, or they start up their own event.
I think you are letting paranoia get to you about feeling like an outsider, because the only thing that matters with this group is that you love techno. I was new to this city when I moved here in 2003 and since then I've become a part of that group - even though I've had some big big arguments with some of the people in it over different musical tastes (Toronto has a lot of purists due to its proximity to Detroit) but at the end of the day, we go to the same events and we buy each other a drinks and our arguments are laughed off.
I have a friend who is relatively new to electronic music - maybe new to techno a couple of years ago - and he is not a DJ, promoter, producer - just a music lover. I went with him to a tempo 416 event in January and couldn't believe it...he knew everyone! and he knew other newcomers to the techno community that had such love and passion for everything tech, but I had never met them before. it was awesome!
Now when I go to techno events, I feel a part of them...part of the scene here. it is great to go to an event, big or small, where you know many people and you know everyone is there for the music, not for the pills or whatever like at guvernment!
Anyways, enough about the TO scene...but if you'd like to change how you feel at these smaller events, come with me one time and I'll introduce you to people.
I am personally really pleased with TO's techno scene right now and couldn't ask for anything more, because I know it could and has been much worse. Don't take it for granted!

.
with all the respecr i have for Aria and its staff...
personally i just think that Aria set up the standards (dj's fee) so high from the begining to attract the montreal crowd from Sona and Stereo w/ big headliners, that after a while no one (different promoters and clubs) were able to match up Aria's $ ... but after couple of years it kind of haunted back the club...
*first time i walked in to Aria was when Deep Dish played their last gig at Sona, so it was so packed over there, that i went to Aria after (june or july 2001)*
Re: Toronto
I used to live there, and paying $20 to the bouncer to get to club was very normal (except Industry)...here in montreal ppl have hard time to pay that money as a cover...so you go figure out the rest!
