Then when i win, you guys will be getting all my obscure techno, minimal, electro and house that i have lying around waiting for some of you professional trainspotters to go nuts and slit your wrist too. |
seriously, it isn't a skill in making the most obscure contest ever. i can throw in 100id's in a contest filled with electro, house, techno, noice, trance, you name it and noone would recognize it.
i dunno if you was taking the piss but that sort of thinking is just ludicrous because blatantly you're not the one id'ing the tracks and i dunno many who have your distinct taste in music. people are supposed to actually id the tracks.

First of all, I must apologise to [MaRt], and some other deeply respected TAs, for at least 3 reasons.
1. My timing was dumb. My post was impulsive and feeded by frustration (I explained why).
2. That part about some contests being BS, I deeply regret that; and I definitely take it back - to the extent possible.
3. When I said that there wasn't anything I liked, that was premature and, this too, stupid as I know that I would be devastated reading that myself, it really didn't occur to me at the time.
I'm sorry.
I'll try and make it up to you the only way I see fit, by entering the contest(s) and putting some effort in. Please understand that my comments concerned a number of recent contests, absolutely not specifically yours.
On the other hand, in retrospect, I don't regret posting my structural remarks, I still stand by them. Also, this thread right here just might've been exactly what the id contests needed. And rarely have I seen such a constructive and no-nonsense thread. Thank you, Floorfiller (amongst others) for the efforts made.
I have read both threads with the utmost attention, unfortunately there's so much here I can't reply to everything I'd like to comment on. At least not now. I hope I'll find the time to formulate a decent reply. I consider it a priority.
Greetings.

about the trackselection: I've compared the ID contest at the Music Discussion section with the ID contest in the local Belgium TA forum, since their contest seem to be more succesful -> last MD contest: 15 participants, last BeTa contest: 11 participants, considering the fact that MD forum has far more visitors. The BeTa contests seems to be more trance orientated, based on the last couple of contests (example)
I don't know all of the tracks, but seems to me that at least 90% is trance. So does this mean we should do the same with the MD id contest? Not necessary I think, i visit the BeTa forum once in a while, and it seems like the majority of the BeTa's are hooked up on trance. The people on MD forum in contradistinction, have more diverse tastes. So I don't think it's a good idea to have a pure trance id contest, but i'd like to see a bit more trance in it though.
about the duration of the contest: I do think 3 weeks is a bit too long, I usually spend (not whole) 1 or 2 days on it.
and about the "i don't participate because i can't win".. come on peeps! Its just for fun! I'm probably not gonna win anytime soon, but I think its fun! And winning is one thing, but beating someone about the same league is fun too! In the last contest me & the_chris were pretty close, and he had more points at the end, but I kicked his butt in one of the past contests!
I don't know about the idea of not posting the ranking / scores. Most participants have a steady place in the league, like Floorfiller is always in the top 5, at least the last 5 contests or so. So I don't think it will make any different.

i like the diversity in the contests, you never know you might find something new you like. some of the ideas here are pretty good, maybe one or more could be implemented every now and again, like have a team battle one contest where teams are randomly chosen, or have a sort of 'sprint race' with less samples but less time. maybe having a limit on the number of times you can submit? in a shorter time period?
the file size can't be an issue seriously, the zip files are like 7mb tops lately. the people who complain "i won't enter because i can't win", well thats just too bad for you. i won't win a contest. chris won't win a contest but who cares? its fun having little battles among the score board, edging each other on, trying to work out where you heard that tune before. i think these contests are a great idea, a bit of fun and games instead of the usual whingeing and flaming that goes on. just relax and have a go, or else just fucking shut up and piss off!
