Here, summer ends in August (generally)... so I guess that must mean that vinyl will last a little longer in Oz

Oh and I thought I should point out that you may regret this comment:

When noise reduction technology (ok yeah it's a fair way off yet but may well happen in our lifetimes) gets good enough you might even see analogue technologies coming back in

cd's will disappear before vinyl...it's been around longer than any other medium + you'll never get a sound as good as on vinyl... even with all the technology that is around! djs don't use them as much because they are lazy.. technology makes ppl lazy and enables anybody to become a dj with or without talent nor taste...

So a track produced on a computer, in full digital using VST's and virtual instruments... then later etched onto a metal master disc, used to stamp a piece of plastic... which you then playback by dragging a needle through the groove, will sound better than playing the original file directly? Explain that one to me. It'll sound "different", it'll have that vinyl scratchy sound, but that doesn't make it better.

Now if you tried to tell me that a jazz or classical recording, recorded fully using analog gear, and then expertly mastered to vinyl would sound better than the equivalent CD recording... now that argument might have more weight to it (not much, but at least there are points to be made).

DJ's are not buying much vinyl anymore because it just doesn't make any sense. It's not going away fully, ever. But for all practical intents and purposes, it's not a viable DJ media for the future. Get over it. $12 for a song that will only be musically relevant for 2 months is non-sensical.

As for CD's...

CD's are just carriers for digital files for DJ's. Everyone I know who uses CD's uses discs they burned themselves, from files off the internet.

When people say CD's are going to go away, I say they were never here in the first place! We NEVER went into Virgin records and bought underground EDM singles to play out. That whole distribution idea never happened in this genre.

As a cheap, simple, reliable, and disposable way to carry your digital files into a club and play on standardized equipment, CD's aren't half bad.

One could ask how long do the CDJ's have left?
People might just plug a harddrive into a digital turntable/mixer device somthing like them crapy ipod mixers but made by with quality in mind.

Just think if pioneer relased a cdj that plays CD's and hooks up to a hardrive no scratches, warp, skip, it might even fit in your back pocket.
