Oh and to add onto that it also helps having a separate account because you'll know how much is in your individual account always but can't always know how much is in your joint account because what if your s/o makes a big purchase at the same time as you. I've heard this happen to friends and it can become embarrasing.

Ideally one would advise their partner of a significant purchase prior to making said purchase. Especially since each of the purchases would need to be more then 50% of the balance of the account as is necessitated by your premis. I would suggest your friends need to communicate better.
