i disagree. i mean it's a great concept in theory, and i always get excited when i find out that one of my favorite books is being made into a movie... but 9 times out of 10, they just suck.
especially when you consider authors like Augusten Burroughs, Bret Easton Ellis (with the exception of Rules of Attraction - i thought that movie was brilliant), Chuck Palahniuk, David Sedaris, James Frey, etc... they don't necessarily write stuff that is easily adaptable to the screen. for the most part, the plot and character development is just too deep, too random and non-linear, for a film... and the best parts about their books are the small details that usually have nothing to do with the overall story, the things that make you laugh out loud, the things you don't notice until you go back and read it a second time.
unless the director and cast are amazing, i'm usually just really unimpressed by movies based on books. too many of them get the "Hollywood" treatment and they just lose the feel of the original story.
i'm just a book snob.
all too true. Im definitely put off by the fact the Gweneth Paltrow is playing Hope and Evan Rachel Wood is Natalie but I like Brian Cox as Dr. Finch and Annette benning as his mother. Watch the trailer when Dr. Finch is going "its a miracle" haha thatll be a good scene.

oh shit, Annette Bening will probably make that movie worth seeing.
it definitely looks like it's getting the Hollywood treatment, though. i bet there won't be one mention of Augusten's homosexuality.

I dont know, isnt gay the "in" thing for hollywood to do right now? Might be why they chose that book in the first place.

well... i guess i shouldn't assume anything just from watching the trailer, as i believe trailers can be pretty deceptive. it just seemed like if they were going to give him a "love interest" in the movie, it would be Natalie.
even if they do touch on his homosexuality, it won't be anywhere near as detailed as it is in the book!
btw, do you know when the movie is being released?

October 11th, limited. That could mean its an Oscar contender being released around Oscar season.
And they definitely wont show/tell anything on that one chapter about Augustens and Bookmans first time having sex. That was like whoa. Im also curious to find out how involved Augusten was with the production and the script.

cool, thanks for the info.
here's an interview between Augusten and the director of the movie...
fiction based on the true story behind the murder of Elizabeth Short in 1947...aspiring actress who moves to CA, and is found in a vacant lot, tortured and cut in half, inciting one of california's largest manhunts...easy read, very engrossing and entertaining overall...film version due out at the end of this year...hopefully itll do some justice to the novel, although chances are hollywood will ruin it
