for you guys trying to make tunes using theory... i've taken formal theory class in college. what i found was is that the tunes i was making before i took theory were already theoretically correct. instead of just using theory, develop your ear. hum tunes all day long. write what sounds good to you. if you use theory usually you song will sound boring. this doesnt mean that good music isnt theoretically correct but using just theory is limiting. youll even find that some of the best sounding chord progressions are considered "prohibited." if you have the patience to learn theory do it but it will NOT be all your going to need to write good music. i believe even more important than learning theory is learning an instrument. pick up guitar, or even easier piano. piano is the easiest instrument to learn to play and teach your self music. all the notes are laid out for you. buy a cheap midi keyboard and its a 2 in one deal..learn music and use it to record tunes.

I have no "training", but this makes sense in light of my experience with production before and after keyboard usage.

My best friend to production is a MIDI keyboard drumming a melodic instrument (such as a piano soundfont). My songwriting skills made a quantum leap after I incorporated basic keyboarding skills into my "inspiration, or pre-writing" sessions.

I have no theory, but I do know chords and I know what makes a scale minor over major. A little knowledge and LOTs of ear-work go a long way (not that I have gone a long way, but I have seen its potential).

I think he means where you might use a note that isn't strictly allowed in key or similar. Also some music like electro I think deliberately uses notes that are out of key (although specfic ones in a specific way) to make the music sound kind of flat, which is awesome sometimes. However thats not really terribly relevent to trance and most likely incredibly advanced.

Darkarbiter and offensive_newbi

by changing the modes and intervals you can use a phtygian scale

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phrygian_dominant_scale

and you can get a different feel and sound.

but this is better for electric or psychadelic
