if anything it proves that it has jumped in the niche rock hipster market, which is NOT where vinyl purist dance djs want it to be. i found a top ten list of vinyl sales in england for i think it was last year or 2004 that listed some ancient IRON MAIDEN record as the top seller in vinyl for that year. ill have to look for that list again.

its the cool hip thing to do right now, to buy 7"s. when that fad burns away, so will vinyl sales.

but how much of a jump did CD & mp3 sales increase? If they increased by 200%, that figure is meaningless. It could still mean vinyl's falling out, but the whole industry is growing.

There is no computer program which can mix for you, and make it sound good. The mix still happens at mixer level, nothing can do that for you. As Blake has pointed out, the only thing it adds, is more time to think about the mix and what you want to do with it.

i didn't say the computer would mix.....just beatmatch and cue---but still how hard is it to throw down a good mix when everything else is done for you---how can u even feel the music??i think it is a load a shite and would never go see pvd again!!!
if all of our vinyl was perfectly cued and digitally beatmatched...i could mix deaf and with my eyes close and so could anyone else!!!

exactly

but i think as long as people keep placing this extreme and unnecessary emphasis on manual beatmatching, ableton or any other computer program will have a tough time being accepted.

the truth is PvD has beatmatched two records together beautifully more times than any of us ever will, or will care to imagine. What does he, Sasha, or anyone else that uses ableton need to prove?

you paid to see the PvD experience IMO: the new exclusive tracks he has, his on-the-fly editing and remixing, his superior programming, the amount of people and social interaction that ensues from he being booked at that club in that city on that night, the vibe, etc etc etc. to say you didnt get your moneys worth simply because you think what hes doing was not skillful is just cheating yourself.

im not trying to be an ass to anyone, im just asking for open minds and willingness to educate yourself on what exactly it is digital djs are doing. when you actually educate yourself on it or even maybe try it yourself, i assure you that you will have a completely different outlook on it.

no blake--u are less than an ass than anyone here haha!!
i find this very intelligent-- u are so spot on with many things---the experience, the fact that pvd could kill anyone on this site with whatever media he wants--laptop,vinyl whatever!!!!
but i mean there has to be some kind of club vs. recording argument!!
i am not arguin the fact that ableton is amazing and i would love to know how to use it!!! case in point-i love avb's magamixes!!
but u have tyo draw the line---if a dj's getting paid and u want a show----what's next--make an ableton mix--press play---have a few drinks and then on to the next gig with the same mix?

this will never happen though

think about it

with all the automation you can imagine, nothing can read people/crowds like a person can. that is any djs first and foremost job, programming: playing the write tune at the right moment. if someone does preprogram a set, it will most certainly not be able to build a vibe.

DJing is really just about having a careful balance of Entertaining and Educating the crowd. manual beatmatching and on the fly remixing via ableton are just tools in which to maintain that balance with. all of those tools used in djing require some sort of learning curve, skill, and talent. sitting their nitpicking, arguing, and trying to scientifically measure their skill levels in order to make one type of DJ look better or worse than another is not only irrelevant and degressive, but a waste of time, since the job of DJing in its purest form can still be done WITHOUT these tools, sock hop and radio djs do it all the time (probably not the best examples but im sure you get my point).

No they are fucking great examples. I have mad respect for a dj who can play tunes in a great order that have nothing to do with house/edm/turntablism/etc.

It's a different format and audience, with a different purpose (ie. house: to make people dance, radio: to rock people out in their car, house, etc) But really it's the same thing in so many ways.

i guess we will just have to disagree--but i am not a snobb- i want to expand my horizons!!! when i win the lottery, i would have the tech 12,s---pioneer cdj 1000;s or whatever, ableton, serato, pro tools u name it!!!
all i am sayin is the techs would be front and centre!!!!
Yes djing is fundamentaly track selection and reading crowds, interactin with them--but interactin with the crowd should also involve them seeing what ur doing!!!
ex--we dj'd a party last week--and it was just casual spinning so we let peope scratch and tried to teach them----how fun is it for people looking at pointing and clickin???
