Hey don't look at me, I use public transit! I do have my G license though, and I drive pretty aggressively. I think timid/apprehensive drivers are more of a danger on our roads than speeders! They're certainly more annoying.

not unless you throw in the 6th gear

not many cars have it, and those that do, it rarely gets used

speeding costs money just by speeding! ahck!

in my experience we barely waste more gas going 120, i notice that in my car (Mazda Protege) the car starts to burn fuel aggressively after hitting 135km/h or 140km/h, but i rarely go those speeds unless i'm really late somewhere and if the traffic allows me to go these speeds (pretty empty highway)

I disagree that degree of control should be defined by stopping distance. Driver experience which relates to reaction time and more importantly the CORRECT reaction (which I think has been described in detail above) are the key drivers which measure degree of control, imo. Not stopping distance. Many people are afraid to slam their brakes fully and properly at 100 km/h while correcting their steering and so may take a longer distance to brake than someone who knows what they're doing and slams the brakes at 160 km/h.

I think a lot of high-speed accidents could be avoided if the common courtesy of leaving the left lane open for overtaking was followed and enforced by the police. I certainly don't support going at 160 km/h but if the left lane was only for people to overtake, even if someone is doing 140 km/h in the left lane and would like to overtake cars in the middle lane; if someone is approaching from behind and wants to go faster, take the short-term inconvenience to yourself, apply your brakes and change lanes to allow the higher speeder to pass. That way you're letting that fool expose himself to the law and at the same time you're helping keep the highway safe by not giving the speeder a reason to weave in order to find an open lane to continue speeding.

I was that "speeder in search of an open lane" so I understand that impatience and frustration re: people not giving courtesy but now I'm that guy that will gladly yield to someone going faster; but I always keep a constant patrol of my rear view mirror which I don't think enough people do on the road.

i think the speed of the driver has nothing to do with how reckless the driver is, why should i be charged with dangerous driving (criminal offense) when i'm driving upnorth going 150 with not a single car on a road in one lane, i think that's ridiculous.. speeding sure. While it is fast you are not endangering other lifes by your actions. You could be going a 100 and be reckless, changing lanes in rush hour traffic.

DVP is by far the worst highway to drive on, one time i was driving to guv at around 12am going about 110 in a 90 in the left lane, it was pretty heavy for some reason but everyone was moving at the same speed when in a slight second i look on my side mirror and i see a car fly by me in the emergency left lane going at least 160, i was so shocked i almost lost control of my car almost hitting the car in the next lane, not only that the emergency lane ended closer to the bridge and he just flew into the traffic almost creating an accident, the most fucked up thing was that the car in front of him was a cop car and they didn't do shit, just kept on going, unbelievable. These are the kind of people that need to be charged with dangerous driving, not the speeders.

This is where police discretion should, and will, come in to play though. In your case on an empty road, going 140-150 probably wouldn't cut it as dangerous driving even if this law went through. But the people who go that speed while weaving in and out on the G.E. at 6pm would most likely get charged and with good reason. But then again, cops can either be nice or total knobs...

Streetracing is an overblown over hyped BULLSHIT "problem" by the media.

its not a huge issue it just makes great news.

50 over being considered racing is bullshit. cruising at a constant rate isnt racing. A contest of acceleration is...but cruising. not racing.

Nevermind the fact that when traffic can move most cruise at 140ish on the 401 and even up to 160 on the 407.

trucks cruise at 120 all along the 401 etc.

what if its 6am on sunday morning and you're the only one on the road. times like that make 50kph over on the highway seem slow.
