Well wikis opinion is just as valid as anyones here but anyway may as well qoute

"Electronic dance music is categorized by music journalists and fans alike as an ever-evolving plethora of named genres, styles and sub-styles. Some genres, such as techno, house, trance, electro, breakbeat, drum and bass, Italo disco, and Eurobeat (closely related to Italo disco) are primarily intended to promote dancing. Others, such as IDM, glitch and trip-hop, are more experimental and tend to be associated more with listening than dancing."

I'd say EDM encompasses about 10% of what I actually listen to anymore. It was never really a majority - and my taste for trance was exceptionally short-lived. I genre hop all over the place, and while I do still listen to a fair amount of ambient, downtempo, and synthpop, I don't listen to much stuff that would play in a club. I'll listen to an occasional funky prog house set from someone like Luke Fair or Danny Howells, but that's really about it aside from one or two sets from the promotion sub-forum here every one in awhile.

I don't see Ambient in there anywhere...

And if you really just want to get into a pissing match, we could always just agree to say Ishkur is the ultimate authority and go one whatever it says at his site.

I mean if we're really just throwing words out there and all without worrying about them actually having any meaning...

Well hardly the point... my point was it mentions genres that aren't meant specifically for dancing.

And yes agreed... the meaning of EDM is irrelevent. I'm just saying when I think of edm/electronica that includes ambient/trip hop etc etc

I mean if electronic music meant everything usually including synths made for dancing that was made electronically that would include r'n'b would it not?

I've gotten a bit tired of it, so I've switched to other genres. Jivebo got it about right though.

I was of the persuasion that most hip hop is already considered electronic music, and if we're going to assess R&B using the same measuring stick, I'm quite confident a fair bit of modern R&B would also fall under the broad category of "electronic" music.

And honestly I don't trust many things that are patent contradictions, i.e. the mentality that would lead one to do something along the lines of including the sentence "Others, such as IDM, glitch and trip-hop, are more experimental and tend to be associated more with listening than dancing." in a definition of "Electronic Dance Music."

As pedantic as making the distinction between the ideas of "EDM" and "Electronic Music" may seem, I still think it's better than just pigeonholing a bunch of stuff into a definition that really doesn't seem to make much practical sense.

I don't use the phrases "electronic music" and "EDM" interchangeably. The first is much, much wider than the second. "Electronic music" was around for decades before "EDM" even existed.

So when I say that I'm "getting bored of EDM," that doesn't mean at all that I'm getting bored of "electronic music" as a whole.

Sure it isn't dance music... but thats a bit of a literal definition.

Progressive rock uses synths but it isn't part of EDM... even if it is electronic and it is sometimes dancey.

Exactly. When I think of electronic music, I think of everything up to and including early musique concrete.

I dance to ambient after I've taken enough diphenhydramine.

Oh, and wow, are there people who listen to trance exclusively? Or anything exclusively? I think you're doing yourself a great disservice to not branch out a bit on a regular basis. Learn what sounds you like in trance, then seek them in other music - the structure can be totally different, and it can be a genre very far removed, but there are still going to be elements of pleasing sound across all music, if you know what to look for. You've already listened to some of the most repetitive music in existence. Don't give me the 'it's not just the same sound over and over bullshit, because it is. At this point, most things have got to sound good. However, careful not to listen to shit that's too eclectic. It will just turn your prejudice outwards once again and you may scurry back into your trance hole. Mars Volta, I'm looking at you, you shitheads.

Doesn't matter anyway... I'll use the term electronica instead since that wouldn't include r'n'b/synth pop etc
